Have your friend go on iTunes and download Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations Episode 3 Season 5. He profiles Washington DC

Good luck and have a blast.

Ken,

Your friend must try Ben's Chili Bowl, as it has a long rich history. This was the first place that came to mind based on your post.

have her check out the Georgetown area, it is loaded with great pubs, delis and various American fare. Huge selection to choose from and an overall tremendous area to sightsee and walk around.

W. Curtis Draper is the most well known tobacconist in D.C. They apparently have a nice selection of cigars and have a website which lists where they are located.

Ken,

A couple of suggestions. Dee's right about Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street. Historic and tasty. Gotta have the "half-smoke, loaded."

Wonderful soul food a couple of blocks back from Chinatown, too. Stunningly inexpensive and heart-rendingly delicious. Also in Chinatown, just for the irony of it, the house where the plot against Lincoln began is now a Chinese carry-out joint. It was Mary Surratt's boarding house, presently the subject of an excellent movie by Robert Redford.

The best, most reasonably priced cuisine-style meal is to be found in the back of Kramer's Bookstore on DuPont Circle. It's called Afterwords Cafe. $30 U.S. will get you a stunningly good meal (I recommend the hanger steak) and a decent glass of wine.

The best seafood in town is to be had at the establishments run by Bob Kincaid, who, incidentally, isn't me.

Across the river, there's a little in-and-out Mexican chicken joint called "El Pollo Rico" and I've never had a better chicken dinner.

Also near DuPont Circle is a cigar bar called Ozio on M Street (just a few blocks from the Aussie Embassy). Check before entering as the last time I was there I got clocked for a $20 cover just to go in, sit at the bar, have a smoke and a drink. That might've been because it was Saturday night.

For the best wings in DC, it's Sam's, just off Thomas Circle. Magnificent. And their mixed drinks are dead-serious.

Hope this helps, Ken!

+1 on the Georgetown area. I used to live down that way many years ago and it was then as is now a great spot to go.

They are still at 14th & G NW but are under a smoking ban until they move a block away in August of this year. You can still stop in and pick something up and then smoke it outside or at Shelly's Backroom which is between 14th & 15th on F Streets NW.

Their new store will be at the corner of 15th & G Streets NW. Larger and with seating for ten! :buddies:

Chinatown and Penn Quarter (7th Street NW between D Streets and H NW. There is a great sammich shop named Taylor Gourmet on K Street NW at 3rd or 4th Street. There is also a store on the H Street NE corridor. Capitol Hill is still pretty much the same with s few additions on the 7th Street SE corridor up from the Marine Barracks. Lots of new bars and restaurants to explore there.

Ah, but now you do know, Ken! Who knows when the hotline may ring with an urgent call for an emergency oenophilic consultation at the embassy? You'll be all set!

Ken, one of the world's best Chefs, José Andrés, operates a slew of restaurants in the DC area. His restaurants range from casual tapas at Jaleo to mind-blowing cuisine at Mini Bar. These places shouldn't disappoint and your friend can research his different restaurants through his main website: http://www.thinkfoodgroup.com/

I hope they have a great trip.

Marcel's and Citronelle are both excellent.

Bistrot DuCoin for French fare in DuPont Circle. BlackSalt for seafood in the Palisades. Sushi Ko for Sushi in Glover Park.

Eastern Market for fresh meat and produce on Capitol Hill.
