redlir Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Came home to these rustic looking fella's. Nice barnyard leather smell on the wrapper. The foot is nice and sweet powerful tobacco smell.. reminds me of a Cazadores I smelled at cold. I rescued one to sample ROTT, the rest hit the freezer after their long trip from the Czar. Here's hoping they smoke like a dream?! This will be my first 898...
tmac77 Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 You will not regret buying that box. Wonderful cigars !!!
pedrodepacas Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 Those things look excellent. I have heard lots of good things about them but have never had one. Enjoy!!!
redlir Posted May 25, 2011 Author Posted May 25, 2011 The ROTT sample was interesting. I wasn't expecting a lot after all they just spend a couple weeks in transit so they need some nap time.. but you know.. it's hard not to try just one! I just barely snipped the cap off and the draw was perfect. There was one small under-filled spot in the middle, but it didn't give me too much trouble. I was well into the first 3rd and nothing was happening.. well under medium.. had a light stonefruit aspect that was just there. I was commenting to a friend when POW then next hit was full on deep heavy buttery flavor with a good amount of spice. She stayed strong all the way to the nub. I wasn't pulling out a whole lot of flavors on this one, but it reminded me VERY much of the cazadores samples I recently had, but a little more dynamic. Looking forward to revisiting these after a month or so of rest. Absolutely loved the power that kicked in. I suspect some downtime after transit may bring out something more interesting.

I'm one of those who can't resist a ROTT smoke, as well. Not smoking something that lovely would be more than my soul could bear. Like you, I'm sure they'll warm up to something really special with a little R&R in the humi. To which Cazadores were you referring? I've been looking at the RyJ version and the way Rob describes them makes them almost sound like a rite of passage.
shrink Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 A great purchase. I think that I understand the comparison to the RyJ Cazadore, but frankly, with age the 898V is in an entirely different league.

The samples I had were really not that crazy.. but I like strong cigars. The 'power' was very similar to this one 898 .. which reminds me.. I need to pick up a box lol!
Dbone Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 Pumpkin pie spice - I love the 898. Coincidentally, the 898 was my first purchase from Rob. Your wrappers have a lovely reddish hue. Enjoy the rest of your box, brother
