Greetings all!

My name is Steve, I’m 29 and from Scotland, currently trying to enjoy the last few days of my 20s! I smoked cigarettes through my late teens and early 20s but came to my senses when the price of a pack started to skyrocket and I realised I just didn’t enjoy it enough to justify the cost. I was smokeless for 3-4 years which was fine, I didn’t crave the nicotine so much as the ritual involved with smoking. I’d never given cigars much thought as I’d had hamlets, etc in the past and was quite put off by how rough they were but one day about 2 years ago I was walking past someone in the street and got a waft of beautiful, sweet tobacco. I turned to look at what he was smoking and saw what I now know to be the distinctive red Partagas band. I love researching things on the net, especially if it ends with me indulging in my other hobby... spending money! So I went headfirst into buying lots of singles and trying out as many sticks as I could. I joined the UK Cigar Forums around this time and that was a great source of info along with Aizuddin Danian’s cigar blog and of course the FoH video reviews.

Then my wife (who does not really like smoke but is perfectly tolerant of my hobby) gave me a 75ct humidor for our first wedding anniversary last September and I remember thinking “Wow, this is huge, it will take me ages to fill thisâ€. A couple of months and one full humidor later I was already thinking about how I could get away with storing boxes and cabs without my wife thinking that I was either a) a cigar chain smoking mentalist or B) robbing old ladies to fund my habit. I’ve only recently gotten myself set up with a decent, 31 litre food grade container with some 65% RH beads and a digital hygrometer so that should sort out my storage needs for a short time at least! Thankfully my wife doesn’t think I’m too mad. I’ll maybe take some pics of my collection so far and post them up.

So that’s where I am at the moment, just buying my first boxes and getting into the hobby properly. From the start I have tried to sample as many marcas and vitolas as possible and I still don’t really feel like I’ve made a dent in what’s available to me but that’s a good problem to have I suppose. I only really smoke 2-3 a week. If I had to think about “go to†cigars the two that spring to mind are the RASS and the Dip2, these never disappoint. I can’t smoke indoors as my wife would certainly not appreciate it and on top of that I’m going to be a dad for the first time in a couple of weeks, we have a little girl on the way :) So with that in mind I have cleared out the shed and turned it into a little man cave. It’s cold but at least there’s no wind or rain.

I may still be a relative newbie with cigars but I do fancy myself as having a decent knowledge of my national drink and would be happy to talk whisky to anyone that will listen. I am also a massive fan of prog rock, just saw Rush play in Glasgow last weekend and they were great. I play a bit of guitar but not really up to prog standards!

Anyway, that’s quite enough. If you’ve made it this far then pleased to meet you!

Into Rush and smoking cigars? You passed the test!! Welcome to FOH Steve. :( My story unfolded similar to yours. Small humidor..moving on to additional larger humidors and coolidor and now I'm looking at buying a 6ft tall cabinet humidor. :) . If this keep up my wife is going to find me in the basement hunched over my collection like Gollum and using the phrase "my precious" not in reference to her but to my cigars. Welcome to the obsession.

Welcome Steve,

Would love to hear about whiskey sometime. I'm especially interested in what you think of new distilleries. I am under the, perhaps mistaken, impression that there have been a bunch of start ups over the last two decades.

In the United States there been a bit of an explosion in "small batch" bourbon, and more of an attempt to produce high quality and diverse bourbons. There is some interesting stuff out there.

If the same thing is happening in Scotland w/r/t scotch whiskey, I would definitely be interested in hearing your take on it.

There is a thread started by someone asking for Scotch recommendations, with a long set of replies.

Best,

Pete

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Glad to see there is at least one other Rush fan on the board!

I'm based just outside Aberdeen, in the north east. You would think that will all the money from oil there would be one cigar lounge in Aberdeen but no :(

Welcome to FOH. Nice Intro! ;)

I saw Scotland and immediately I thought of the Scotches I drink while I smoke. Mainly Macallan 12, Lagavulin 16, Glenmorangie 18, Macallan 18 when I want to treat myself.

This is random, but I bought this Kirkland (costco) 7 yr old bourbon that looks pretty nice, but is definitely not as smooth as the Macallan 12.. It can't even touch the Macallan 18.

Any thoughts on Bourbon? Recommendation of Scotches? :D
