Ken Gargett Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 we had the fabulous noosa food and wine festival over the last few days (great spot north of brizzy for those that don't know it - the event attracts all sorts from around the world, including greg norman). i snuck back to brizzy friday evening for the glorious reds beating orcland. and had run into gav when collecting my reels a few days earlier and apparently there were some fish around. so, had a few hours on a calm sea with gav on saturday morning just off mooloolaba chasing tuna - could not do a full day as had to present at the festival late saturday morning, and elie was up for filming spitbucket. at times, we got in so close to the shore chasing them, that it was an easy cast to the beach. in less than 10 foot of water. this one was a bit further out (and tried to get to fiji). quite a few fish around but we only had a chance to cast to one school (had i been better and quicker, possibly a second). this was with a 12-weight flyrod and was soooooo much fun. took best part of 30 minutes and went 25 pounds. amazing what one can do when rob is not hogging the best spot on the boat or getting first chance to cast or paying the guide extra to set him up with all the good fish. and whilst i never keep anything i catch on fly, as i was headed to the noosa food and wine festival, gav suggested i take it up. which i did. tried to get tetsuya to do something with it but he insisted that under no circumstances should anyone try and eat tuna, sashimi or cooked, until at least two to three days after catching them. bleed them immediately, which we did, and keep on ice or in the fridge, but don’t touch for at least that period. had never heard that but if tets says so, then that is what one does. brilliant chef.
cigarroverzulu Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Very Nice...Sounds like Rob missed a good one!

maalouly Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Why do you always have the same look everytime there is a fish in your hands? And now I know why you cancelled the interviews at 9:00 in the morning, well done!

Colt45 Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Very nice, Ken. But I have to say, if the fish were that close to the beach, I'd probably have skipped the boat and casted from the beach. But that's just me......

But that's just me...... they do use 4wd's to chase them along the beach there on occasion but not really an option if fly-fishing.

The partners meeting can't come soon enough!
Ken Gargett Posted May 15, 2011 Author Posted May 15, 2011 I agree....pitiful performance by Ken. Put Spitbucket on the backburner while he was out chasing fish. The partners meeting can't come soon enough! listen, i checked with commandante elie who gave me permission to have a few hours away (i think so he could get over his hangover - all i heard was something about eventually finding him and/or various winemakers at 3.30 am on a park bench in hastings street) before filming. we did half a dozen priceless vids for spitbucket and best of all, had i not caught moby tuna, we would not have got to interview tetsuya for spitbucket (those who follow things like that will surely be as excited as i was - he is not only one of the nicest people on the planet, also one of the greatest chefs). so even tho i was out braving the elements while you were asleep, i was still working for spitbucket.
CigarmanTim Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Why do you always have the same look everytime there is a fish in your hands? To me Elie, the fish Ken catches always have the same look on their face......and that disturbs me.
El Presidente Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 fish Ken catches always have the same look on their face......and that disturbs me. Tim....that is becasue they are embarrassed
benjaminbbush Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Great catch Ken. If its in the boat, then it counts.
asmith Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Tim....that is becasue they are embarrassed Embarrassed or disgusted with themselves for being caught. I also like that Ken has the same look on his face each time he catches a fish, sort of pure amazement that he has caught a fish.

He skims through the fishing websites, looking for a pic of a dude with roughly similar build, then he expertly pastes his face in. That's why all his pics have the exact same expression!!
