Hey folks,

So I had a RASS last night POL OCT 10, and it was the 2nd out of the box. The first one I had with a nice rum.. it had a deep flavor, earthy, stewed fruit, dark cooking chocolate in spots.. It was a little chaotic but still very good.

Last night I was overwhelmed ( I mean completely) with just a salty flavor the whole way through the cigar. All the same notes were there but I felt like I was smoking a salt lick. I had to rinse my mouth out several times it was so salty.

I've had a touch of salty before, but this was just over the top. What is that saltyness from? It is something in the burn, or is it something on the tip of the cigar? Vegetable gum?

Cheers

Labor of Love. If you dont want them, I'd take care of them for you.:-)

You can neutralize it by dipping it in a little honey, vanilla and black coffee. Dont overmoisturize just give it a dab...Cheers

The few SLR that I have tried have been incredibly salty. Salt all the way through and by the end (half way through) my mouth was like a nun's arse. Even worse I'd been walking the dog so was miles away from a drink.

I'd just assumed it was the SLR flavour base?

I don't find Saltiness as a common characteristic in many cigars. Some Sancho Panza perhaps but it is never an annoying trait.

If it is an overpowering and unpleasant saltiness I would recommend cutting the foot again to remove any possible glue taint.

if it persists then it is likely to be a fault of the blend (taint/poor fermentation).

Hey folks,

So I had a RASS last night POL OCT 10,

Have dug up one from the same box code and am having it now. Will report back.

I sometimes get a salty taste from the first couple draws which I would think are coming from the cap. Dissipates fairly quickly. But I have never experienced an overall saltiness from the cigar as a whole.

Had a Juan Lopes Sel #1 last night that this happened on. Not unpleasant. No biggie.

I was off on the box code ( I wrote the email from work) it was actually POL NOV 10 not OCT..

I had another one tonight, and it wasn't as bad.. but I did go to the dentist today for a cleaning and my palette seems out of whack so I don't know.

Is there any side effect of lowering storage temperature of cigars? I had a RnJ tubo later and it seemed salty as well ( although no where near as bad as the RASS I had). I recently moved my cigars to a thermoelectric coolador with beads I've been using already for some time. The temp is 17 degrees(ish).. just wondering if lowering the temp and humidity would leave 'something' behind as they lose water and dry out a bit down to 65 from the 70 they were previously stored in at the local shop. Maybe I should just give my palette a break and check back..

Ya this is a first for me as well. I've definitely had a 'touch' of saltiness now and again.. but not like putting a chunk of salt in your mouth lol..

I can pretty consistantly get the from Sanch Panza coronas that I have from the 90's & early 2000's.

*Cuban Bolivar Tubos have a consistently salty taste...but are still very powerful. I prefer and do find most great cigars to start off with that familiar sweet cool taste to the tongue, then get me that Cuban Twang...Oh Mama!! :daydream: I do expect my cigars to have that chararcteristic sweet cool taste. The Sancho Panzas (habana), and Juan Lopez's have a bland start, then pick up somewhat.

sancho panza's - i only smoke'em cos of the subtle salty taste. love it.

i remember a pack of hdm petit robusto having a salty flavour, otherwise just the sanchops.

Of course, if you've just downed a whole packet of pretzels, well, pretty much any cigar is salty ;-)

Gimme gimme. Luuuuurve that salty tang - one of the special things about RASS, to me.

IMHO saltiness is from the SLR Lonsdale, Regios and Double Coronas. Specially old ones.

It was told me that the leaves of these cigars where from an area that was touched by se wind......

For me the only marca that has been consistent with that salty flavor is Sancho Panza...other than that I only come across it on ocassion, more than likely from a Montecristo, but that is about it. The saltiness is never overpowering or unpleasent though.

The Dip 2 I had for the mystery cigar competition had a very distinct saltiness through the last third. It was a new flavour experience for me and I found it quite nice.

I remember reading somewhere salty tasting tobacco comes from fields close to the ocean / sea.

You make a point that has me wondering. Perhaps the previous RASS and RASCC I've had were not on the mark with the standard RASS profile?

I also have a box of RASCC currently with the exact same box code and it has that salty tang you would describe. My previous samplings have been really earthy and almost a cocoa flavor.. these new acquisitions are more that salty tang and stewed/stone fruit I'd say. The one particular one that started this thread was waaaay over the top though.

Would this be the 'umami' taste people have been talking about?

Good question. I think there is something wrong with this box code though.. sampled both a RASCC and a RASS last night that were complete salt licks.. I couldn't even get through the first half of each. I can understand having some salty tang in a profile, but this was like table salt and windex.. completely blew my palette for 12 hours. I guess I'll follow up with the vendor and see what they say.
