benjaminbbush Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Ladies and Gents, I have a quandry. My wife and I are expecting our first child this July-a girl-YAY! My wife's family are Cuban expatriates and I love smoking cigars with my father-in-law. I will be taking part in the time honored tradition of handing out cigars but I need something that will WOW my father-in-law as well as everyone else in attendance. As I see it I have two options: Option 1: Monte C. No 2s from our host and fearless leader. From everything I am reading, these are GREAT cigars but since they are CC's there is a risk of Gestapo intervention. Some Risk v. GREAT Reward. Option 2: Padron Anniversaries probably the torpedoes. The appeal here is that they are great cigars and they are NC's so that takes the potential for Gestapo intervention out of it. NO Risk v. Pretty Good Reward. So I ask you all, please help a newbie out and give me your feedback. I will go with the majority here. I will certainly test the waters with CC's through our host and fearless leader in the future, I just don't want to risk this specific purchase. I thank you all in advance for your assistance.
Rogers72 Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Stick with Rob. Email him and ask him/Lisa/Smithy and ask them to pick a good box for your. Relax. Congratulations! There is nothing like children!!!
Habanos2000 Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I'm so over NC cigars that I don't even consider them for smoking while taking my dog to use the bathroom. Such a significant day REQUIRES a memorable smoke. You know what you need to do!
cigcars Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I'm presuming money's no object. But if it is, why not everybody's fast favorite, Partagas Serie D No. 4's OR if domestics are preferred, I have yet to hear anybody run down a Nick Perdomo classic. Try the Gran Cru Series, Corojo wrapper. It's just like smoking a habana, and it's more accessible.
Colt45 Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Just for discussion, I'd consider keeping it simple. Given the inconsistency of Cuban cigars (and if you read through some threads here, the M2 sits high on that list), the WOW may be that, "WOW, these aren't that good!" On the other hand, you seem to enjoy the Padron, and you can be pretty sure of the consistency here. But above all, I'm not so sure the cigar is going to matter as much as the event at hand.

investandprosper Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Definitely a piramide for a baby being born. Monte 2s have been hit or miss for me, but an HQ or PSP box should prove otherwise. I believe Rob said recently that the current Upmann No. 2s were excellent. You could always post an ISO in the trading room to see if anyone in the states would have your back in case your box doesn't make it from Czar.
bc8436 Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 My vote is for a box of Sir Winstons. If you've decided on a piramide, then you can't go wrong with the Montes. From Rob's last visit to the warehouse, the current stock of Monte 2s, Upmann Mag 46/50 are excellent.

CUBANO Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 SOWEGA, As a Cuban I would prefer a Monte #2, and I would order an HQ box from The Czar. I'm assuming that you have a humidor to keep them fresh till the big day. Muchas Felicidades en el nacimiento de tu hija.
anacostiakat Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I would go with the Behike 52 or 54. Personally I like the 54 even though it is too honking big. Otherwise I would go with a SIG IV or a Bolivar CE or a Partagas 898V. Depending on what size you prefer.
Habanakane21 Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Something special huh...I'd have Rob select a couple singles for you and your father-in-law without a doubt. Depending how well you and your father-in-law get along should dictate how long of a smoke you should get. That's if you plan on smoking them together. Great father-in-law= Partagás Lusitania's, HU Sir Winston's Good father-in-law= Behike 54, Monte 2, Magnum 50 Okay father-in-law=Behike 52, Partagas 898 Ass= Monte Open, Guantanamera, Hope I've help ! Congrats and Best Wishes!
El Presidente Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Go with your gut If Cubans are what you decide drop Lise a line and she will be happy to help.
jacksfull Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I'm a fan of tubos for handing out singles. This is particularly true of CC's as there isn't even a cellophane to protect them if not going straight from box to flame. In addition to the protection of a tube, it's a fantastic presentation that adds a little feeling of importance to the gift. Unfortunately, MC#2's are not offered in tubes (that I know of). Personally, I've had great luck with RyJ Short Churchill tubos for gifting singles. If you're liking this vibe, others worth considering, available in tubes, would be big brother RyJ Churchill, Partagas SP2, or any of several Cohibas. Oh, and BTW, never had any problems taking delivery. Make it CC's. The only catch is, if you have a humidor full of NC's you may soon find yourself wanting to just pitch them in the trash to make room for new stock from overseas!

As for storage problems, I guess i will have to deplete my current NC stash so as to "stocak" (sorry smithy ) up on CCs. Thanks to all who gave input. I greatly appreciate everyone taking the time. I guess it is time to jump in the deep end.
