Hi all

I was smoking a Mag 50 Tubos and 5 min. into the smoke the wraper started to split and split it did. It started with just a small split about 0.5 cm (1/8 in) from the burn and got bigger has it got hotter. The burn was almost even(not the worst burn I have ever seen) and the filler stated to swell quite a bit (by about 2 to 4 ring gage) the taste was like I remember

It was in my humidor at 65-67 RH in the tube but the cap off

can somebody shed some lite on this :o

A few questions:

  1. How long have you had the cigar?
  2. How do you humidify your cigars?
  3. Can you question your hygrometers accuracy?

1 I have had the cigar since oct 2010

2 I use 2 hydra units in a lauderdale humidor 26 in H x19 in L 16 in D

3 I have two digital that are calibrated every 6 months with a boveda calibration kit

all the other cigars that I have smoked were all OK

I've never, let me repeat, never had a cigar split on me! I smoke very slowly and draw smoothly and slowly through the cigar. Try drawing slower and give the cigar a minute before each draw! I truly believe this works as long as the cigar has been properly cared for!!!

Smoking indoors or out?

What was the approx temp/RH where you were smoking?

Had the same issue this weekend. Taking a cue from Rob's question about temp and RH at the time of smoking, I will attribute my problem with too rapid a change in these factors. From a Humidor at 17C and RH 68% into a travel tumidor tube of questionable reliability. One day and night subjected to dramatic temp changes in the Canadian Rockies. Smoked outdoor in say about 7C RH unknown but likely at or less than 50%. Split like it was an exploding cigar. Fortunately the binder remained intact and the cigar performed well enough. I figure sometimes you just have to take what you get...

temp was about 14 to 16 C RH about 60%

was with 5 of my smoking buddy's and none had a problem

there humidor is about same temp and RH and in the same region

will see if it happends again

I am a slow to med slow smoker in general and care for my cigars, like changing position in my humi to avoid uneven RH level due to placement(side of separators),and check on them at lease 3 to 4 times a week

@ Colt45 the wraper did seem very thin but that's just my take on it

thanks for all the input

Let's say all the particulars (relative humidity, temperature, etc.) are in check....

Perhaps there was an occult tear in the binder beneath the wrapper? And, as you smoked it, the cigar unravelled?

Or, the integrity of the wrapper and/or binder was already in question due to some kind of trauma (drop, crush, etc.) unknown to you and unobserved by you prior to smoking it?

Who knows, why your cigar did what it did. I do believe that if you control the two variables in your humi, then it is safe to say that your recent misfortune and potential horrors won't be a regular occurence.

I think its your humidification system. All electronic systems apart from the cigarspa are terrible when storing singles, these units only add humidity and dont regulate it. So a single cigar will act like a sponge and soak up any moisture.

My feeling is that the cigar had taken on too much water, this would explain the swelling you referred to, and thus the filler burst the wrapper.

Just my two cents.

I've had this happen to a Partagas 898. Just over half way through the cigar it swelled about 50% larger than standard and the wrapper and binder split. I had notice a hard spot in the cigar at that point before I lit it up.

I think what happened was that the tight spot held more tobacco (obviously) and when it heated up due to the ember burning closer this released moisture held in the extra tobacco which expanded the cigar.

It's strange that there was not really any major draw problems before the cigar burnt to this point though.

Hmmm.....I'm on a Mag 50 right now that is doing exactly as you describe. It's been in one of my 65/65 fridges for more than a year.

Edit: it's 16C and 63% humidity.
