This legendary and iconic box has always eluded me, never finding satisfaction which others have claimed time and time again. Partagas is one of Cuba's oldest and most revered brands. Once commanding the most cigars sold, the pedigree would lead one to expect nothing but the best. Unfortunately, high production of the Serie D No. 4 means you're going to see some bad with the good of this completely hand made product. The demand is so high for this particular cigar that production runs year around, with or without high quality raw materials.

My personal preference is not for this size cigar, a Robusto, but there are exceptions. I'm not going to turn away an enjoyable cigar based solely on its size, except for something 56 RG. Then it just becomes uncomfortable. I've picked up on a lot of chatter that 2010 vintage has been kind to the Serie D No. 4, so I waited for Rob to pick a decent offering and I took the plunge hoping to experience what all the hype is about.

After leaving the box to settle for a little over 90 days I've been able to smoke a couple and they are very impressive. These lovelies open with a sweet paprika spice. I'll call it a paprika flavored jolly rancher. On the down low is a very hint of cream. This is more or less the first third. Just the slightest extra tug needed on the draw. The cigars are packed tight but with care allowing for perfect combustion. There is complexity. Middle way the paprika jolly rancher takes a back seat to heavy doses of cream and campfire wood. Ample amount of smoke fills my mouth. Out of the nose is a different story, a heavy dose of pepper. Up until this point I'd say medium in body, dancing down a notch just to return from time to time. As the cigar smokes down near the band, the body kicks up a notch. Cream takes a backseat to campfire wood and paprika spice. I really don't smoke down much past the band. Any bitterness? Stored at 64RH 65F for 90 days, the answer is no. I really expected these to be harsh.

Czar is batting at 100 right now. I really can't say I've had a bum box. The aroma of this box when opened fills the immediate vicinity with a musty earthy stench. So have my past attempts at this cigar simply been poor examples? Only the man upstairs knows, but down here I know this box is ready to smoke now and will be enjoyed over the next couple months.

Great review & Pics Andy! It took me a while to understand, or just find a good box, but I am now a D4 believer!

Great stuff Andy :D

It is experiences like this that keep me in the game. Believe it or not we still get a thrill when members have an experience to remember

Thanks Mike & Pres. Lesson learned here is not to write off any cigar. They have the good or bad and good days, yin and yang. Glad I went with my gut on this one, I feel rejuvenated LOL

Nice review Andy...loved the pics. I've had both bad and good experiences with the PSD4. I'm happy to report there have been more good than bad.

Some boxes reminds me of my golf game. Some bad shots, but from time to time you get the perfect swing that keeps you wanting more LOL

Wonderful photos. The PSD4 is one of my faves.

Thanks Toronto

Great review, thanks. I have to say I had never enjoyed one of these until I received an 10ct HQ box. The HQ makes a huge difference I believe. It was just before the HQ/PSP program began and haven't had them since. Don't know why, I guess there's just too many cigars...

Nice photos Dbone. I'm almost reached through my screen to grab a stick. :) PSD4's are one of my faves. My box has three years of age on it. They're like a nice cup of espresso, nice and rich flavouring but not harsh.

Great shots. I'm a Partagas lover but have only had on PSD4 and did not like it very much. Alas I smoked it without any time in the humi. Keeping my eye out for a box to try in the future thanks in part to this review.

Thanks

Thanks :P I'd love to see how these are in 3 years, but I don't think they're going to last... have to get a another box for sure.

Well done, Dbone. Your photos were awesome!

Thank you sir!

If you get that opportunity, I hope they're as good for you as they have been for me brother.
