michael69 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I've noticed there are quite a few members that have smoked early 2000's Tainos..... I'm off to Geneva next week, and one of my regular retailers there has these (not sure how many boxes) at just under (equivalent of) $130 USD seeking advice as to whether I should go for these (before I go and see them in person naturally) I'm not very familiar with these, so opinions would be helpful please. Of course, I'll check them out once there......
melies Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Well I just bought some, and they look and smell wonderful, but because they arrived today, I still can´t tell you how they are
michael69 Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 Well I just bought some, and they look and smell wonderful, but because they arrived today, I still can´t tell you how they are I've mainly smoked the Gloriosos 2008's and the Deliciosos 2009 cuban ER's (other than a few of the medailles d'or no.2's from the regular line) I'm guessing the tainos can't really be compared to the RE's?
melies Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I´ll try to at least take some pictures of the box and post them tomorrow... I haven´t tried any LGC RE although I have a deliciosos 5 pack, that i should have tasted a long time ago So I´m little to no help hahaha!!
Smallclub Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I have had a box OSU MAY 01. These were VERY mild, the mildest churchills I've ever smoked. Not very interesting. There are better cigars to grab in that shop…
bassman Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Yes, they are mild, but for a mild cigar they have complex flavor. At age 10, if well stored you'll hae some nice morning smokes. I'd wouldn't want 25 of them so the box of 10 is perfect. I just finished my last 01s about 6 months ago. I've seen 09s around now, but am sticking with Sir Winstons & Boli Corona Gigantes for my current Churchills.
michael69 Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 I think I'll pass on these.... probably a bit light for me (I will very definitely be grabbing some '01 lanceros and '04 fundadores however!) I'm also picking up a second 15 box of RA Phoenicios
rfenst Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I just opened an '09 box. Mild side of medium, but far from an air-ball. Strongest honey sweetness I have ever tasted in a cigar. Still rough around the edges, but worth smoking- even now. I plan to load up on a few more boxes. Amazing potential! I think Czar's is much less than $130/box.
thechenman Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I have to say that I haven't been a big fan of the LGCs...there is a bit of sweetness to them, but they are grassy/herbal at the same time...sometimes to the point of being bitter or overly tannic. Wasn't a big fan of the Tainos, or the Delicias...I have enjoyed some M'dOr No. 2s though...but that's about it. I have recently purchased the Immensas to give them a try, but overall...this cigar is light, and while it can be complex...it is full of complex flavors that I myself don't care for too much. Much of the regular production LGCs I've smoked tend to be on the older side...I think because so much of it is still floating around out there.

sg1234 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Now if you can get some Medaille d'or#1s or #3s, those are worth having. +1 I am hooked on '02 MdO3s right now. I tried a Taino from circa 1998 at the LCDH in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico last year and it was the most bland, flavorless cigar I have ever smoked. The construction was horrid too. The wrapper kept peeling off. Everything else in the walk-in was in tip top shape, so I don't blame storage conditions.
LeafLover Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 OSU 02 #1's you can't go wrong with if you like the honey profile.
michael69 Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 so, I'm thinking consensus seems to be get boxes of Medailles d'Or rather that Tainos? Must admit, I did enjoy the no.2; never tried the 1 or 3. what are everyone's thoughts on which of the medailles are best - are they similar profiles, or very different from each other?
Smallclub Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 The No.3 and No.4, my favorites, have a somewhat similar profile and they're generally very well rolled. The real question is: are you going to like a 28 or 32RG panatela, that delivers small amounts of smoke, that you must smoke carefully and slowly, and leaves you wanting an other cigar because it is not at all satiating? If they're smoked like one smokes a robusto they get hot, harsh, etc.

Obviously these would be lighter and probably less complex as a rule I would imagine.

I am smoking through a 2000 box of #3 and a 2002 box of #1 at the moment. Both are very satisfying. I couldn't call a winner but as someone else said, the #3 generate very little smoke and they have to be smoked extremely slow (to the point where it almost goes out between puffs). Floral sweetness! I would have called those "Mille Fleurs" The #1 tastes very similar to the #3 for me but is less "high maintenance". Hope this helps! I will light a #3 up right now.

The #3s are my favorite... full of flavor, relatively small... they look like Number 2 pencils stacked in the box. It is astonishing that this little cigar has so much flavor. I bought 3 boxes when I could, they will be gone soon, part of the legends of Cuban cigars, get them if you can...
