Ken Gargett Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 now, i have a fair idea what will happen to this as soon as the prez wakes up but i really could not resist, in view of some past posts (especially those that have been misunderstood). just remember, i'm only the messenger (and proof that it is not only the GB's that get fat). Pray it ain't so: Young religious adults may be more likely than nonreligious peers to become obese by middle age An inactive lifestyle, watching TV and eating too many fatty foods are all to blame for many Americans being overweight and obese. We may have to add religion to that list. A study finds that young adults who regularly attend religious activities may be more prone to obesity by middle age than their nonreligious peers. Jell-O salad? We're looking in your direction. The study included 2,433 younger men and women who were part of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study and were followed for 18 years. Religious participation ranged from high (once a week or more), medium (regularly but not weekly), low (rarely) and none. Young adults age 20 to 32 who were on the high end of religious involvement were 50% more likely to be obese by the time they hit middle age compared with those in the "none" category. This was true even after researchers adjusted for sex, age, race, education, income and the participants' body mass index at the start of the study. During the second year of the study researchers discovered that those in the high participation category tended to be female, black, and have a higher BMI. The study, presented this week at the American Heart Assn.'s Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism/Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention 2011 Scientific Sessions in Atlanta, offered no explanation for why religious activity might be linked with obesity in middle age.
sloth Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 er, umm... so if you are 20 to 32 and deeply religious... you will be fat when yer older.... but that doesn't mean yer fat now, right? OK, so... if you are obese at 20 to 32 and not religious... are you 50% more likely to be skinny and healthy when you are middle aged?
Ken Gargett Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 Ken...Ken...Ken... i tried so hard, i swear...
Ken Gargett Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 try harder....... in my defence, it is a bit rich to get bagged for doing nothing more passing on a report from the american heart association ( i assume a reputable entity?). currently wearing my most innocent, angelic face...
michael69 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 it's my experience that religious types eat a lot of cakes
Ken Gargett Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 it's my experience that religious types eat a lot of cakes that is priceless. the people in the qantas club currently wondering why some idiot is giggling endlessly and wiping away tears. fits my mum! morning rob!
Colt45 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 currently wearing my most innocent, angelic face... which goes well with your goat horns and hooves.....
Holysmokes Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Well I would say that it only makes sense. That is all.
Ken Gargett Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 which goes well with your goat horns and hooves..... seriously colt, sometimes i think you just like to sit back and lob "grenages" into the forum to annoy rob. if i'd made such a veiled reference, i'd be hauled over the coals...

Ken............. as always, you are correct. I now realize that by me acting in such an irresponsible fashion, it might lead new members, and perhaps more easily influenced members to feel it is OK to do the same - as well as make it more difficult for my fellow mods. I hang my head in shame.........

michael69 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 that is priceless. the people in the qantas club currently wondering why some idiot is giggling endlessly and wiping away tears. fits my mum! morning rob! believe me Kenny, in the UK it's rife, from C of E coffee mornings to Jehovah's Witness meetings; all everyone is waiting for is the end when it's tea and buns...... in fact I'm not certain it's allowed for anyone to be baptized unless they can bake (just don't ever mention fairy cakes to a fundamentalist; they equate these with the occult...) C of E couldn't care less though; since the split from Rome anything goes (so long as it can be served on a dainty plate with a pie-slice) apparently it all harks back to Jesus's fondness for battenberg or something. people wonder why the religious 'chosen ones' are often describes as "nutty as a fruitcake" ...... Now I think I'll go smoke me an aged (and wise) Hoyo Des Dieux (this is the true God eh Ken?!)
laficion Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 OH boy !!!, It's going to be one of those days, I can feel it coming
Aksan Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Well interesting topic. But I think the titel is a bit misleading. Going to church is not the same as being religious, as going to Mac Donalds does not make me a hamburger . But nevertheless an interesting finding. To be honest I have trouble explaining their results. Maybe it is the cake afterall.
Fuzz Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 They are not obese, they are just full of God's love...
Trevor2118 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 OH boy !!!, It's going to be one of those days, I can feel it coming You'r not wrong Guy...............like watching two trains heading towards each other on the same track.
Trevor2118 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 OH boy !!!, It's going to be one of those days, I can feel it coming Anyway, there appears to be enought Moderators on the job today.........
matthew261 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Ken, I had no idea you were so religiously devout in your 20s and 30s!
headstand Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Ken, I love your nose for trouble - you're a hoot Since this appears to be a free for all... As for the article; start with a pervasive fear of human passion, place much that is sensory in human existence out of moral bounds, and you are left with food: cake, and a lot of it. As they say 'been there, done that'. Faith misunderstood is a sad thing. Now, I find few things more rewarding than sharing the bounty of a well stocked wine cellar (sorry Ken, 90% old world), and having a conversation through clouds of Cuban smoke - now that's embracing your neighbour. Cheers, Alan (middle-aged, no Michelangelo's David but not too chubby either, devout-ish)
mazolaman Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 believe me Kenny, in the UK it's rife, from C of E coffee mornings to Jehovah's Witness meetings; all everyone is waiting for is the end when it's tea and buns......in fact I'm not certain it's allowed for anyone to be baptized unless they can bake (just don't ever mention fairy cakes to a fundamentalist; they equate these with the occult...) Now I think I'll go smoke me an aged (and wise) Hoyo Des Dieux (this is the true God eh Ken?!) Don't forget the paper doileys, and gossiping about who's got a new car... And if God hadn't meant us all to be fat,he wouldn't have created all those tastey treats......more tea vicar?
LuciusSulla Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 If you look at the demographics of the U.S., the more obese states tend to be the more depressed economically. The majority of the states are also "Bible Belt" states. The highest obesity rates in the U.S. correspond to the most impoverished and uneducated areas in the country, which also tend to be more often than not the more religious states. I'm not surprised that there is a correlation between the two, but I wouldn't go so far as to say this if proof that religion makes you fat.
snickers99 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Ken, Enjoying the thread immensly. Although our respective views on religion and politics are at odds our shared love of cuban cigars and good wine makes us brothers of a sort. Therefore, in brotherly affection, let me give you a little advice. Now, some university brainiac would probably say this article is nothing more than statistical vomit, drawing an incorrect conclusion from unconnected data. I say hogwash! One need look no further than the recent cyclone that ravaged Australia and was triggered by your infamous Catholic post. Even Rob agrees! (it's on video). Therefore, while it is undeniable that religious people all will eventually become obese black females, I caution you not to again anger the allmighty with a critique of his sacred works!
