.... boxes, which box would you have?

(I'm thinking of ageing/investment potential)

Edmundo Dantes El Conde 109 RE Mexico

Por Larranaga Magnificos RE UK

Ramon Allones Phoenicios RE Lebanon

this is a (semi!) hypothetical question!

i've not actually smoked any of those so can't comment on ageing.

as for investment, who knows but i would be careful about buying any RE for investment. i think that with so many being released, the range has been so diluted that i don't see much investment potential. there will be the occasional exception, possibly. so that said, i'd buy whichever of these you most enjoy and forget about investment (there is a good chance that, assuming you pick the best qulaity cigar among them, it will have the best potential anyway.

I'm only familiar with the Por Larranaga Magnificos, smoked three and have a dozen baking. A tremendous smoke in its own right but also a very safe investment. The Boxes of 25 are like gold dust and are now only to be found at Auction.....last London sale two boxes were sold for £780 and £750 respectively. Thats pushing $1,500 AUD.

well, it's a semi-hypothetical question in the sense that I actually do have a 25 box of magnificos and a couple of 15 boxes of the Phoenicios (as well as a few singles of each)

alas, I think I missed the boat on the 109's; I've smoked a couple though and have one single left in the humidor.

Ken, I'm not sure I agree 100% with you RE the RE's (see what I did there?!); true there are a heck of a lot of them, many not so great as you have mentioned in your video reviews, but certain ones seem to occupy a higher level in the minds of many aficionados (these 3 being a case in point I believe).

I never buy with only investment in mind; I always intend to smoke 'em at some point, but you never know what's around the corner (and anyway, i find it a useful self-justification for spending large amounts of money on Habanos!)

seriously though - there aren't many things you can can buy that appreciate in value over time (as long as you pick carefully of course) - art, wines, cigars.....

I do have quite a lot of LE's (as opposed to RE's) which may "do better" in these terms; what's your take on these?

Monte sublimes (full boxes); Cohiba 2006 piramides (full box), Cohiba GR (nearly full box!), Cohiba 2004 DC's (half box), Cohiba 2004 sublimes (a few singles), Cohiba 2008 Sublimes extra habanos book (a few singles), Bolivar gran belicosos 2010 habanos book (singles again)......

I have one each of the 109 and Magnificos and have not tried either yet. I have heard great things about both cigars, but it seems people like the first release (2007) 109 much better then the second with 08 codes. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

Also, nice list of LE boxes! Good stuff.

I like the Phoenicos best (only had a couple of 109's) then magnificos (bit too young when I smoked the one's I've tried)

That's why I got a couple of boxes while it's still viable (unlike the 109!)

As I said, I have a box of the Mags, but won't be touching them for a good while yet.

as for my odd collection of hard-to-get singles; even though I don't have boxes, the prices for some of these is getting stupid in some places;

for e.g. here in London there's a v famous cigar shop selling Cohiba sublime singles for......

well. I won't say but there's 3 numbers in it and the first isn't a "1"!

most of your LE's are from earlier years which were the better releases for me. i have a similar array - monte's, cohiba pyramides, cohiba sublimes and DC's (from 03 rather than 04?). brilliant cigars and probably likely to do very well re investments.

there are some good RE's - rob and were talking about this the other day. bolivar simones (canadian, i think) are another - clearly quite a few members have far more knowledge re these than i do and it sounds as if a few are likely to do well as investments. for me, they are more likely the exception than th erule but i completely agree - buy what is good and what you like. if they turn out to be good investments, consider it a bonus.

yes Ken, DC's were 2003 (sublimes 2004)

funny you mention simones (LOVELY cigar going by the ones I've had) I was thinking of investing in a cab of these....

what's your take on the SLR Pacificos (another one I really enjoyed) as opposed to PL Robustos or Estupendos? I trying to decided between these at the moment......

ED 109s - can't go wrogn with those babies. Absolutely fantastic...

Boli Simones - very lovely sticks. The only Boli's that I've found I really enjoy, aside from the Gold Medals. We're still able to get ahold of some Simones here in Canada - not sure what it's like on the international market.

enjoyed both robusto's and especially the estupendo's but yet to try the pacifico's (or at least, if i have, they made no impression).
