Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami appeal

I was Just thinking and watching the unfolding tragedy in japan and thought our suppler is in this region as are a lot of the members of F.O.H not that where you live is a factor in this

Would it be possible for PCC to bring out a special box or for part proceeds of every box sold box to be donated to say the International red cross

Just an idea that I for one would be glad to support

I have been working on a presentation here tonight but a couple of your posts have caught my eye and got me a little concened. We don't know each other well but we have found some common ground on topics so I am hanging my hat on that and the hopes that I can phrase this in such a way that I don't offend you.

You seem to be very upset over the incidence in Japan. While I can't speak for all of us, I am betting that we all are. It is a God awful disaster! I am damn proud of those stoic people. In many parts of the world such events would have been accompanied by chaos and crime. I see none of that in the reports there. The Japanese are incredibly disciplined and honorable people (if you don't mind my generalization).

Perhaps you have lost family or friends or even property there. If that is the case please accept my condolences. The situation seems to be weighing heavily on you. Rather than expecting PCC or a third party to help you in your quest why don't you get some friends off the board together and donate a few cigars. With Rob's blessing perhaps you could run a little auction off the site in the trading forum.

You collect fivers, teners or some desirable singles from donors and auction them for charity less the shipping cost. Your friends would have to understand any policy regarding guarantees, none probably as this is an honor system for charity. Take the ball and run with it on your own. I have done this myself with some friends and it does work. Unfortunately I am not going to be able to be much help here myself, I have got plenty on my plate already and we are not exactly next door. Perhaps some members could help you out on some other continents. There are a lot of members here, many fine and generous people, but you know that. I'll bet you could find the help if you asked.

It is a lot of work mate! But if you're impassioned by the moment take it on.

Lastly, please don't think that because we carry on and don't wear our emotions on our sleeves that we are callous. That is not fair and you know it to be inaccurate about the fraternity here. Don't assume that another does not care. Words alone don't encompass who any of us are as individuals.

I personally believe that a cash donation to an organisation like the Red Cross is what is required.

I know of a member who is wanting to donate his own stock up for auction to put the proceeds towards the Red Cross , I am just waiting on Rob to let me know how he wants to set this up

Thats the point guys. People donate some cigars (their own) and an auction is made up of lots, singles, 5'ers, boxes etc. The cigars are sent by the donors, people generally pay more than they are worth because it is charity, the cash is grouped and sent off.

I know it works because I have done it before but you have to have an amiable crowd as there are always foul ups. It has to be understood that it is not a commercial venture in case something goes awry as it always does...

So lets say that Mr. Piggy puts up a Partagas Seleccion Privada, a Partagas SdC #2 and a Diplomatico #1 as a lot. Some member bids it up to $100 and I send him the cigars. The money is collected and whole stash is sent off to the Red Cross. Maybe Rob collects the money and gets a nice tax deduction and puts up a couple of boxes to be auctioned as well. A bunch of members get involved, we get to smoke some cigars that we don't have (and paid too much for) and away it goes! Some members are buyers, some donors, some both. It actually works! -Piggy

Maybe an FOH Poker tourney to raise money? Every participant ponies up a cigar, pays a fee to play ($20 let's say) the winner takes all cigars or you can have runners up. The money goes to the RedCross or similar fund setup for the Japanese quake/tsunami. The logistics might be a bit difficult as to who ships what to where but I'm sure it can be planned. Or to Piggy's suggestion an auction. Everyone gives up something special from their collection and everyone has a go at it.

Unfortunately, or actually fortunately I now no longer have to pay tax, thanks to the Senior Australian' tax offset and the Low Income tax offset. The Government has finally done something right.

1. We can't have anything to do with taking the money.

2. There is no tax deduction as whatever you come up with is not a registered charity.
