Wow what an awesome article by a total tight-ass.

Thanks for sharing it. I'm a bit unclear about one thing though..is he really saying that you should not clip your cigar?

Rule II rules

"SMALL, well-made Cigars...smoke more pleasantly, than many of their big-bellied brethren. ...the dwarf to contain 'that within' which the giant usually lacks."

Thanks for sharing that! Interesting read!

I like this: "The respectable manufacturers, who have a credit to lose, of course, are not guilty of this trick; but there are rascals, you know, in all trades." So true=))

And this: "In the first place, moisten the Cigar lightly and delicately with your tongue; pass your finger gently round it—a Cigar should be used tenderly as an infant dove: with soft, lady-like touch close up its seams" - sexy description

Curious little book. I would presume that "Ebenezer Cullchickweed," author of the preface, is a joke name, or is it possible this was a real person of some notoriety?* And did you notice the weird sentence fragment of a review for "The Cigar" at the end, "I remember reading in that excellent little publication 'the Cigar,' of--&." from Hone's Table Book.

*Having written that, I notice that William Clarke published his books about cigars under this name, and apparently about swimming, also.

Thanks for posting this link.

I recommend searching for "cigar" using google books, and limiting the search to the 19th century. Lots of interesting stuff turns up, including a book about manufacture of cigars in Havana, U.S. tax regulations on cigars, and! unfortunately not available, Charles Dickens wrote a book titled Cigars.

Best,

Pete
