Hi All,

I decided to review this cigar,as I enjoy the brand, and rob mentioned he had some regard for it.

Cuaba Distinguidos.

OPM

Nov 09.

The wrapper is mid brown and seems quite refined, quite thin.

Their is a slight aroma of sweet grass.

construction feels good, with only a little tightness here and there.

From the off,the usual flavour of nut comes through on the cigar, with plenty of smoke and no draw issues.

as the cigar progresses, the nut flavour becomes more pronounced,

the cigar begins at a medium strength.

As the cigar continues, toward it's thickest point,a slight sweet spice begins to appear.

Still the predominant flavour is of nut.

The spice comes and goes.

the construction seems spot on,which has been an issue with cuaba in recent times.

The draw is perfect, and the ash clings on with no signs of falling,to near half way down the cigar.

At around halfway, the nut flavour gives way to a flavour of hay, this continues to the end of the cigar.

The cigar remains medium to medium strong throughout, but there is definitely plenty of tobacco strength in there.

The cigar has a slight uneven burn near the end, with a bit of canoeing.

Overall,I would describe this as a hefty cigar, but without being overly flavourful.

There is plenty of flavour there, mainly of nut,but with some subtler flavours introduced as the cigar progresses, hay and slight spice.

Construction was very good, with only a little uneven burn.

Also,in terms of value for money, this was a way better cigar than the few Cohiba robusto that I have tried recently, which cost considerably more.

A good cigar.

Cheers,Kevin

Mmmm. Those look good. I can't remember having a Cuaba but the reviews seem to be so hot and cold. Those look amazing, and it sounds like you enjoyed that one... I'll have to make a point of trying one.

Cheers for the replies folks.

I would say there could be more flavour in the current Cuabas.

They still do have the predominant nut flavour, but in past good examples, there has been darker wrappers, and richer, brown sugar flavours to them.

So to answer your question,it didn't entirely grab my attention at every puff...

Similar complaints would be applied to the divinos I have recently bought, which are of the same period in 09.

I am pleased to find they have solved the construction errors that plagued this brand.

I would also like to try some from 10.

Real nice, Kevin. The Cuaba marca has eluded me ever since I grew appreciation for Cuban cigars so I was interested to read your time spent with this cigar.

The nut flavors you describe wet my appetite. Would you say this flavor can be found throughout the Cuaba Marca?

Great review, Kevin. I really enjoy it when members post these reviews - especially when its one I haven't had. I've added this to my list of ones to try. Thanks for taking the time to share.

Dbone, yes,I would say the nut flavour is a particular trait of this brand, particularly in the divinos.

Cks,cheers for the feedback.

I would say to anyone wanting to try a Cuaba,go for either divinos, exclusivos, distinguidos or salamones.

Also I would try to go for a2010 cigar,as this brand seems to be improving greatly from previous problems.

Update on these...

had another today, after they have sat in the humidor for a while.

I have to say today's was a a really classy cigar.

Nuts as usual, with added sweetness now, with slight molasses undertones.

worth a look.

Nice one Melies,I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Let me know what you think.

I had diademas in Majorca some time ago, which was a bit flavourless, but I guess it would be unfair to judge on one cigar...

The brand has been very variable for some time, but lately seems to have sorted out some construction issues, and are making some good cigars.

For me,it's between the Salamones, distinguidos and divinos....

Awesome, Kevin. Nice review and pics, but the continuing updates and additional feedback are always a benefit to all, especially those of us who haven't really delved into a particular cigar like this one. Very beneficial. Thanks for sharing - much appreciated.

Cheers.

So I finally got to try the Distinguido and I can say it was a really interesting experience, I have more photos in my camera, but for now I just have the one from my phone.

I bought it at LCDH México city, and I got a perfect stick form a 2010 box, no visual imperfection what so ever, and it was like you described it a medium brown wrapper. After the I´d cut and lighted it. The draw started a little bit hard, but it almost instantly corrected itself to perfection.

It started spicy and with lot´s of nuts and cream, by the 2/3 the cream almost disappeared and the nut´s took over until it started to mix with barn aromas. The problem started at the 3/3 when lot´s of ammonia started coming out, and the nicotine burst made me a little light headed, it just seemed to me that this cigar would benefit from a year or two in the humi.

Overall I liked it until the 2/3 a lot, and will be revisiting it in a year or so

Nice to read your follow up Melies.

I agree with your flavour descriptions.

I guess my own version from 09 has had a little longer to mellow out,as The amonia taste in any cigar is a sign to be laid down for a while.

Some of the best cigars in my humidor have started out as pure amonia.

Glad you enjoyed it though!Looks a good example.

Had one on Sunday night - the last from a 10-box of 08s. Bloody wish I'd bought more! Was really a stunning smoke. With an uneven burn to start off, it actually evened out perfectly. Draw was perfect. Taste/aroma kept me interested for the entire length. The most pronounced flavour was strong espresso - I'd say almost coffee bean - and some earth. Great smoke! Lasted about 1hr30.
