Cohiba Atmosphere Lounge in Cancun

Recommended Posts

I had a trip planned to Cancun over Xmas this year, but canceled it bc of all the issues that have been going on there recently. Kind of concerning. We're also going to St. Thomas in Nov, so I'm looking for a diff trip instead of another beach vacation. Maybe Europe instead this spring.

I was going to say The Virgin Islands St john Virgin Gorda area blows away anything in Mexico. Although I still think Baja could be the most beautiful stretch of land anywhere in the world but with the Mexican Government its basically worthless.

We have been to Cancun four times, once to Cozumel, and in a week we are going to Cabo we have never had any problems. I have asked the Federales and Police for directions and they were always very helpful.

VIVA MEXICO!

I have been to Mexico lots. It has been a few years since I was near Cancun and yes there were speed traps for tourists. Some towns on the way to Florida survive on speedy Canadians rushing to their Florida get aways in the winter. I have a friend who is from Mexico City and he returned from a reunion after 10 years away. His comment is stay away from the drug routes and you should be fine. Allot of countries south of the US have crime issues due to poverty so it pays to be smart and not flash money or jewelry around. My brother lives on the west coast of Mexico and one of his favorite stories is being 'held up' one night walking home from the bar. Two young Mexicans asked if he had any money. he replied he just left the bar and was broke. They felt bad for him and offered him a beer!

The one country I felt 'safe' was Cuba. I walked all around Havana with a $4000 camera and never once felt at risk. At times I did have 3 police officers following me to ensure no one did a ****** and grab :} .

As a Cuban I can personally tell you that the 3police officers that were following you was NOT to keep you from being robbed, but to make sure you were not a Anti-Socialist.

My son got married at the Ocean Coral & Turquesa Resort in Riviera Maya in April of this year . This is a beautiful ,all inclusive resort targeted for adults in my opinion . We had a crew of about 60 people and had a great time ! Of course , we never left the resort . There was no need to . I too had heard the recent horror stories about Mexico and saw stories on the news . I think for the most part a lot the drug problems you hear and read about happen around the border . Someone had told me that you see police officers carrying guns in the airport . We never saw any of that , and believe me I was on full alert . We had a resort bus that took us to the resort and back to the airport .

We had such a good time that the group wants to go back next year . The only problem is there's not a lot for children to do . We took our granddaughter to Atlantis 2 weeks ago . That too is a great place ! Especially for the kids . I' ve been there 4 times . That being said , there's places in Nassau I'm not going when the sun goes down . Heck there's places in the most cities in the US where you better watch your back !

As far as TJ is concerned , that's a no brainier ! I was in San Diego in 1974 , just out of high school . I had a cousin who was in the navy and lived off base there . He told me all about the police stopping you there and acting like they were going to take you to jail . All they wanted was your money . The answer to the problem ..... stay the hell out of TJ ! There's nothing there anyway.

I guess what I'm saying is , I'm not going off on an adventure in a foreign country ! Rob me once , shame on you . Rob me 3 times , shame on me . Travel smart people !post-7208-0-92205100-1377827075_thumb.jp

I'm sorry that you had a bad time down there, I have been going to Cancun, Cabo and other places down here in Mexico and never had a problem. I know that there are problems within my country, but you make it sound like its the end of the world down here. You have to be careful in some places that's true, but that applies almost anywhere in the world. Most of Mexico its good, and without a problem.

Have a taco man :D

Also this thread is from 2010, do we really need to revive it just to criticize my country?

Viva Mexico. On your avg day most parts are safer than NY or Chicago. Sure there are some tough spots but that's anywhere.

I knew someone was going to call me on the Monte Opens!! :innocent: :innocent:  There is a method to my madness, this box is very interesting, the wrappers were extremeley dark, almost a maduro shade. I asked David if he had ever seen this before and he said no, it was very unique. When they get home I'll post a photo of them. I'll be glad to swap a few of the original Fundadors, my experience with them is a very inconsistant draw, but if it did draw well the flavor is great. I had a stick in Mexico that did draw well and it was great. The LGC was much more full and spicey than I expected, complex but a little green. The jar is stunning.

I had Monte Open (Tubo) just like that that a business associate brought me back from Mexico once. Beautiful dark oily wrapper and I thought to myself, how could this not be good? It wasn't.

I'm a frequent visitor to Mexico. Cancun and Mayan Riviera mostly. And once to Manzanillo. I've probably been down there about 12-15 times. I will admit that pretty much most of my time was spent in all inclusive resorts. But I've stepped outside. Chichen Itza, Tulum, Xcaret, Cancun (city area). Playa Del Carmen. I've had great trips there and chatted up many locals. There's good people there. Should you be careful? Always. Every country/city/town has it's criminal and seedier elements. Especially when it comes to tourists who tend to be easier marks. Not going to Mexico because of their drug problems is like not going to New York city because there are gangs in Los Angeles. ;P

I've been to Mexico plenty of times, as a single traveler on business, just me and my wife (who happens to be Mexican) and also with the wife and kids. Never had a problem. Were there areas that had me concerned to be in? Yes, and I got the hell out and stayed away. Common sense is your best friend, stay with what you know and with larger groups if you're nervous then you can enjoy the culture, food, weather and cigars to your hearts content.

The problem with Mexico is that the law can do what they wish. You have no rights and if they decide they want to mess with you there isn't much you can do. To me I don't care for resorts. I like to get out and see the country. If I am just going to a resort I will go to Palm Springs or Vegas. Cabo is a very nice place and the fishing is excellent. But again I have been to mexico about 50 times or more growing up here in Southern California. 20 years ago I didn't have much of any problems. In the last 5 years you are taking a huge risk. I could tell you horrible stories about americans getting thrown in jail for doing nothing, american girls getting rapped by gangs and thugs. I will go just about anywhere in the world but Mexico is on my ban list for the time being.

Say what ! I would rather take my chances down in south central than deal with Mexico. Everytime I go to Mexico its a shake down by the Policia. Not worth it my book. Drug dealers for the most part don't mess with you its the damn government. The cops make a living off American Tourists. ITS A SHAME !
