Disburden Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 So far this is the second Bolivar cigar I have tried in the past two months. The first was a Corona Extra that I got in a sampler from Lisa which I loved to death. Last night I opened the lid of my small humidor and picked one of the few Bolivar RCs I had inside. The construction was firm, not spongy like my H.Upmann no.2 I had last week and the draw cold was loose enough but no a wind tunnel. I was actually planning on writing up a full review, with pictures, and taking notes while smoking to scribble down the different flavor notes I discovered. That plan changed when I was so into the cigar that pictures and notes totally slipped my mind! The opening and first third of this cigar was surprisingly Mild-medium bodied and not at all punchy like the other Bolivar I had. The flavor was incredible though, much better than the CE and I was instantly swept away into a symphony. By the end of the first third I couldn't believe my senses, first the burn was straight as an arrow around the whole cigar and it stayed that way until the end of the nub. It's rare that I have a cigar and not notice a burn swing here or there so this was amazing to me. The flavors I had coming to mind were cocoa, coffee and milk in the first third, my mouth felt numb by the end of it and creamy at the same time. By the second third I was tasting things like honey and nutmeg while the chocolate and coffee notes were the main flavors I had, the creaminess stayed throughout. I am trying to remember what I was feeling by the end of the last third but all I can remember is sitting on the couch with a big smile on my face while my wife kept asking me,"What are you high"! lol. The cigar didn't make me light headed, it wasn't strong at all, it was just that good and creamy. Has anyone else ever had this numb mouth milky feeling with these? It was a pure delight and I think I may have had my favorite Habanos thus far. I kept the band in a jar near my desk because the feeling about this stick was so special to me, I knew I would remember it for a long time. Favors throughout: Coffee, Cocoa, Cream, honey and nutmeg in the back. Burn: Straight as an arrow all the way down to the nub, I never had to relight. Did it get hot or bitter towards the end? NO! I actually smoked it until my fingers were burnt! Overall rating: 92
mbrody Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 THanks for the review Disburden. For me, Bolivar cannot seem to go wrong lately, as long as you get a decent box/selection. My favorite is currently the PC. I find a good RC can put you in a zen like trance. That is the state I think you were in! I have had this with other cigars, including a great RC. The only bad thing, is that I am often chasing this trance, and it usually hits me when I am least expecting it. Start with a great specimen of a cigar + the right frame of mind, and it equals a great smoking experience. One that makes you really look forward to the next. Enjoy!

Disburden Posted September 8, 2010 Author Posted September 8, 2010 Great review. I loved the Boli RC a LOT, until I smoked my first Coronas Extra. I've gone the other way than you. i wonder how it would have gone had I smoke the CE first and then an RC down the track. Guess I'll never know, but I'm not too bothered, they're both fantastic in their own right! Thanks for sharing. I think my opposite experience has a lot to do with how I prepared to smoke the RC over the CE. With the Corona Extra I took it straight from the Humidor and smoked it, this may have lead to the smoke being not as good as the Royal Corona which I took out of the humidor to advice on the forum and let it set for a few hours in dry box before smoking. I think this is why my burn with this Bolivar was so much better than the last.
Disburden Posted September 8, 2010 Author Posted September 8, 2010 It is a beautiful thing when all the planets align Let me tell you, Prez, I think I saw some new stars being born in the Milky Way while smoking this one!
Guest rob Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 ... and this folks, is why buying regular production cigars represents great value!
bigfunkyg Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 I'm half way through a Royal Corona right now from an 08 box right now. I got this box almost 1year ago to the day. I have had some great ones from this box but this one seems a bit off. Construction and draw are fine but the burn isn't 100%. I find with Bolivar more than any other Marca that aging is a big factor. I have a box of BBF that took over a year to come around.
Ellery Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 Great review. Tearing through a box myself.
scrot Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 I've always enjoyed a good Bolivar. Great review.
mazolaman Posted September 14, 2010 Posted September 14, 2010 One of my favourite cigars. A bit lighter than the rest of the Bolivar range, but with that creaminess.... Suppose I'm going to have to buy some now.....
micha Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Great review, I never had any of these but your description is just causing my mouth to water. I think I'm going to try one out pretty soon. Thanks a lot for sharing.
jman Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I felt the same way when I had my first BRC, it was dated POS 06!!! It blew my mind away. Last one was an LRE 09 and this box is amazing...
Cearbhaill Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Well I am sold. This will be the next cigar that I buy. Very nice review.
Disburden Posted September 19, 2010 Author Posted September 19, 2010 Well I am sold. This will be the next cigar that I buy. Very nice review. I'm glad I could assist you in your purchase! Lol, enjoy them, let them sit a bit!
cubanmule7 Posted November 28, 2010 Posted November 28, 2010 Had one thanksgiving night. Yes it was very nice; smooth, nice burn, great flavor but the taste seemed the same throughout the smoke. I don't normally taste the tastes that I see you guy's talking about ie: cake, coffee, cream, roasted lamb and the rest but I think I know a good smooth smoke and this is truely one if them. I'll be getting some more for the humidor.
scottkenda Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Another great cigar. Bolivar is probably my favorite line of Cuban cigars. If you want to try another great Bolivar, try there Coronas Junior. Bought a box back in 97' or 98', and still have 4 left. One of the best cigars I've ever smoked. Just ask Rob, PC's, and TPC's, are some of the best little cigars out there. Should always have them in your rotation.
Disburden Posted November 29, 2010 Author Posted November 29, 2010 I'm definitely going to try those. So far Bolivar tends to be my favorite "Brand" also. I have yet to try a Monte though...
SCgarman Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 I have 2 boxes of Royal Coronas in my humidor. Both from '08. Interesting is that the partial box I am smoking now has real dark maduro wrappers. Dated March. The full box that is sleeping is dated Feb08 and the wrappers are many many shades lighter. Will be interesting to see if they taste a bit different with the different colored wrappers. Love the flavors of this stick, starts out real deep earthy and spicy and then mellows into a nice espresso, chocolate and leather flavors. Only other Boli I have had is the Corona Extra which is a completly different stick than the RC.
