Despite my mild disdain for the price/packaging of both, I have tried several singles of both and really enjoyed them. good choc flavours I dont taste that often in cigars. Thinking about getting a box of one.

Any preferences? Why?

Thanks everyone.

Never had any of them, but I can tell you that all my Cohiba experience was terrible while H. Upmann continues to produce the finest cigar from MAG46 to Winston's.

I read lots of good reviews on the 48 ...

I got both Dicko and I would choose the 48 nine out of ten times. The mag 48 offers a bunch of flavours while I find the secretos like an espresso. fine for what it is but just like real life you don't choose an espresso every time you want a drink. More versatile I guess is how I would describe the mag 48, more suitable for different times of day. If you like Upmanns then it is an easy choice.

Mag 48 is a good cigar thru the spectrum, Secretos is one of my fav to end a (smoking) session. For now I would stick to the 48's for much of the reasons given by bolivr...

Interesting topic. I have multiple boxes of both, and have found each to have amazing flavor profiles. Without going into a full blown review - the Secretos are full blown dark chocolate and espresso. Extremely smooth and creamy. Pair perfectly with some morning coffee or port.

I get a lot of sugar cane and rich oak from the 48's. They have a bit more power than the latter, but its complexity is amazing. I wish they were the length in between the 46 and 50, though. But the price for a box is reasonable for an EL.

Both will age amazingly.

I agree with the prevailing sentiments. If pressed, I prefer the Mag 48. As Michel mentioned, the Secretos are a perfect final cigar. Quite the nightcap. I would find a way to stock both of these.

Weird that you bring this up - I had an Upmann 48 on Friday night... and then a Secretos on Saturday night.

They were both very good... but the Mag 48 is a clear winner for complexity and finish on the palate. The Secretos was very good, but lacked depth and was short on the finish.

I agree with Mike mate.

I too have both and love both however, the Mag 48's have so much more to offer by way of flavor profile, its far more complex and suitable for any time of day.

Having said that, the secretos are also nice to have in the humi mate but if you're just buying 'a' box, grab yourself the Mag 48's!

Another cracked record here as well Dicko, Secretos is a great cigar to enjoy with a coffee or to wind down after a session, but it has nowhere near the complexity of the Mag 48.

Keep a stock of both, you won't regret it :peace:

Apart from anything else this size is perfect when time is of the essence :peace:

I would agree fully, but I still chose, and would choose again, the Cohiba Maduro 5 Secretos. It's just one of those unique little cigars, that should just continue to erupt pleasantly into the future - definitely one for aging long-term, to have a couple of sample sticks every 6 months to a year or so, and go from there.

Yes, the Mag 48 is more versatile (I actually prefer the standard Magnum 46 tubos), but the Secretos is just...special.

The Secretos is a great cigar. The only vitola in the Cohiba Maduro line up that I really enjoy. However, like many others have pointed out...it does not stand up to the H. Upmann Mag 48 in terms of complexity or versatility. However, the Secretos does beat the Mag 48 in terms of strength, and I think aging potential. My vote though was for the Mag 48, and it does not hurt that the Mag has a better price point.

I am a big fan of the Secretos and haven't had any Magnum 48s yet, but I am really intrigued right now. In fact I'll be getting a few tonight and putting 'em up against my Cohibas. If they are that good they sure are going to be stacked up in my humidor. Thank you guys for those helpful posts.

I have had some excellent experiences with both Cohiba and H. Upmann. I've had a few bad Mag 48s of late, burn issues tunneling. My other cigars kept in the same humidor smoke well, so I don't think it's a humidity issue. Might just be bad luck. I've had some excellent Mag 48s too, though.

The Secretos have been more spot-on for me, they are little flavor bombs. Very good with morning coffee, but at near $200 for a box of 25, they are pricey for a small cigar. I had one this morning with some Kona Irish Cream coffee (black), and it really set the tone for the day.

That being said, if I had to choose between the two right now, I'd probably choose the Upmann because it is cheaper, and is a larger cigar. More bang for the buck, and when you get one that is spot-on, it's perfection. If you can splurge, get the Secretos.

I'm not sure why this popped up again. last post seems to be from september, but perhaps a vote in he poll pulls it to the top of the form.

Anyway, I went for the mag 48's as that seemed the way the majority was thinking. Although, investandprosper, that does seem like a good breakfast !

Still sitting in the humidor, but they smelt lovely on arrival, really rich tobacco and chocolate.
