redlir Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Hello everyone I was introduced to the world of cigars in the last few months by one of my coworkers. I've really started to come to appreciate them more and more as my palette is developing. After doing research on the internet I stumbled upon this forum and the youtube video's by the Czar gang ( keep your chin up smithy!), I think this is the right place for me to continue to learn and explore the world of great cigars. Coming from Canada, we do have open access to most of the cubans unlike our U.S. friends to the south, so it does make it easier to try 1 or 2 of a specific kind at the local shop to see if it suits me. The prices however are obscene due to high tobacco taxing, so I've started looking elsewhere for a reputable vendor with a passion for them and who isn't just 'selling' them. Initially I've been smoking a lot of the introduction type corona and petit corona cigars such as mille fleurs, and many of the hand finished versions. After trying some VERY GOOD samples of Monte #4's from my local shop, I've also had a love/hate relationship with a couple of boxes of them. Watching the review after on the friendsofhabanos youtube channel, I fully understood the hit and miss of this offering. I've also tried many of the non cuban offerings out there, but haven't been overwhelmed. Last week my friend returned from Cuba and brought me some Cohiba Siglo V's and a Monte #2's. It was at this point I realized what a good cigar can be. I think as an amateur, I had the impression that the larger cigars would be too overpowering for me, but I think the complete opposite at this point. I was absolutely floored by the complexity and flavor of these samples in the larger format. While I wasn't pulling flavors of marshmellow or crushed ants out of either of them, they were so good I was sad to finally put them out. Now I think I'm needing some guidance and discussion on the larger ring types and formats that I can enjoy. Looking forward to sharing and discussing with you all. Cheers, Red

How true - a fairly common misconception - bigger / fatter = more powerful or flavorful. Try a Partagas 898V and see what intensity of flavor is all about
