finecigar Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 If any of you on here are involved or know about the killing of whales in Japan, particular in a hidden cove in Taiji and a certain species Dolphins. I have recently seen this truly amazing film that I will say may be the best documentary made in a long time. I never was very familiar with the topic of the whale slaughter until I was sent this film from an older marine professor of mine. If any one on the form is interested in any type of marine conservation or take part in action of these issues I would highly recommend this movie- it is done to perfection. I must warn you, it is quite graphic. If you are not accustomed or can't view the killing of animals then do not watch it. (http://www.thecovemovie.com/) I will promise you will be stunned to a new degree. I know it does not involve CC's but is so interesting.

chuck1rar Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 Just a short post to say I watched "The Cove" and was very insightful For others benefit will make available the movie to download for anyone interested. Also next week with more time on hand will post a more complete review and thoughts. But be warned the video is from only a western perspective and in this case a little disappointing..

Lol okay, will do. I hadn't realized my bravery until now. And Oh, that is great news. I was told that the killing was still going on but I am very glad to hear it has come to a pause. Hopefully this film and other private sources will be able to take on or finally take a bold stand on this issue. I think it already has in ways, almost more than the I.W.C. has been seen to do- seems they do not have much power. Anyways, I would recommend seeing the movie and let me know what you think Ken. I think it was just nominated for an oscar. All in all, thanks for your interest!
sungnicholas Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 lol--I'm new here but even my first thought when I saw the thread was 'wow, finecigars is brave to post this.' I also plan to check out the movie--it got a lot of press in Seattle when it came out. Pretty much universally positive reviews of the film regardless of whether one agreed with it's message.
samb Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 It really is terrible what they do to whales over there. I dont think I could watch a film like that. But I will check it out when Im not at work.
finecigar Posted February 14, 2010 Author Posted February 14, 2010 It really is terrible what they do to whales over there. I dont think I could watch a film like that. But I will check it out when Im not at work. It is almost sickening just to think about it. Although they call it and defend it by saying it's their "tradition" or "way of doing things," it is quite strange because how can one have a tradition in their culture if no one in their culture even knows about it? Anyways, I didn't want to watch it when I heard what it entailed but I am glad I saw it- in many ways. It was an experience like no other that I will surely not forget.
Ken Gargett Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 could see the brief intro clip on their web site. will keep an eye out for the full thing. beyond me - and no offence to our brethren from those countries that do practice the slaughter of these marine mammals as japan is not alone - how anyone can do that or allow their country to do it. yes, i know that all countries have faults and practices unacceptable to others but this seems so obvious and so barbaric. i would have not the slightest problem with the harpoons being turned on the whalers themselves.
Ken Gargett Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 for anyone that wants the sea shepherd updates, here is the latest. you can get on their email. Sea Shepherd E-Newsletter Defending Ocean Wildlife WorldwideFebruary 11, 2010 Dear ken, I have good news to report. Tomorrow marks a full week that not a single whale has been killed in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Our goal now is to make it two weeks and then three weeks. We escorted the majority of the whaling fleet out of the sanctuary on Tuesday (more on that in the first news story below), but just today they tried to come back into these internationally protected waters with the intent to kill more whales. Both of our ships were on scene trying to stop the four whaling ships from returning to the sanctuary. A heated 5-hour battle ensued. There were many near misses but no collisions and no injuries. Please check our website in the next few minutes for the latest news on this development. We are steadily impacting their quota and intend to continue to hit them where it hurts - their wallets. We will not tolerate the death of a single whale. If they attempt to kill and transfer a whale to the Nisshin Maru, we will stand our ground. We are the only group of people down here defending the whales from the cruel harpoons of the whalers. Your support is vital to our continued mission. Please read on to learn about our recent news. On February 6th, in response to the Bob Barker actively blocking the spillway to the fleet's factory ship, the Yushin Maru 3 intentionally rammed the Bob Barker, creating a deep gash in the mid-starboard side of the Sea Shepherd vessel above the waterline. Ken Gargett Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 and sadly i misread before - it is only one week, not three. and no doubt i have transgressed various foh rules in posting that but i can live with it.

No kidding. After seeing the film, it deepens these feelings even more. I agree that these whalers are quite barbaric and unfortunately the I.W.C. does not do too much with all this. To your post about the Sea Shepherd- The one man photographed in the article, he is actually interviewed frequently throughout "The Cove" I am pretty sure. I enjoyed his commentary throughout the film.
chuck1rar Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Here is the link to get the movie. Will only be available for a few days so if ur interested please download straight away. The Cove
