Ken Gargett Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 During a private "fly-in" fishing excursion in the Alaskan wilderness, the chartered pilot and fishermen left a cooler and bait in the plane. And a bear smelled it. This is what he did to the plane. The pilot used his radio and had another pilot bring him 2 new tires, 3 cases of duct tape, and a supply of sheet plastic. He patched the plane together, and FLEW IT HOME ! Duct Tape ? Never Leave Home Without It (Note the rifle and holster strapped to the side).
FlyFishingDude Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Only in Alaska......I've seen some pretty weird stuff up there...... .
acidmase Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Always have a roll in my tackle box you'll be amazed how many times I've used it!
kaleehb Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I would stop fishing and start bear hunting...WOW!
armedak Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Oh yeah, that's why we call it 100 mile an hour tape!!
Nedule Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I can speak from experience, those bears in Alaska are big. I was there with my family Sep 2009 fishing on the Chilkoot River near Haines Alaska. Lots of fish & lots of bears. If you ever get a chance to go, do it. Here's a couple of pic with me, fish & a grizzly in the background.
Ken Gargett Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 assuming you stay a distance, how much do the bears mind you being there? if you catch one, do the bears try and take it?
Nedule Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Ken - the bears on this river are regulars and kind of habituated by people, it's a fairly heavily fished river & there's also a fair number of tourists taking pictures so you can actually get kind of close. I think the closest I got was 15' while the bear ate one of the fish we just caught and gladly let him eat.

jdbrown Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Great stuff Ken. I have logged hundreds of hours with bush pilots in the NWT and Nunavut regions of Canada. Many with the legendary Tundra Tom. They are a different breed. Have also witnessed first hand the destruction a grizzly can do when searching for food. I always guide myself and do not carry guns but do keep tru-flare bear bangers. They are as loud as M80's. Great pics on the Alaskan River!!
thechenman Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Very nice pictures. Beautiful and serene. Would love to get up to Alaska one of these days.
