semery74 Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Ok, so I have soft spot for the Montecristo No.2. It's the vitola that sold me on being a Habanaphile and I've been collecting ever since. Usually I smoke the top half of every box and save the bottom for a minimum 6 years, then smoke one a year on or about it's anniversary. I was board this weekend with too much scrap wood around the shop. The idea behind this is to consolidate space in my cellar. I have a ton of half boxes due to my smoking schema. Furthermore, this was my first attempt at a box joint, after overcoming a few obstacles I realized that I'll have to create a jig. This will allow my to bang these out repetitiously. The box is honduran mahogany with Spanish Cedar Dividers between the layers and the side of the stacks. The one thing that always makes me nervous is long term storage in dress boxes. Considering I have had so many non-ISOMs that tasted like newspaper, surrounding my investment in solid wood puts me more at ease. Long term I've thought about a fleet of heirloom humidors, perhaps a few reproductions of some famous boxes by Habanos. One in particular would be the the Millennium Humidor. So with this thought in mind, I have been slowly acquiring the largest pieces of Spanish Cedar I can find. I have enough rosewood and cedar to build as many as I need, unfortunately like so many of us, I lack the time. Cajon Patent Pending
Colt45 Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 That looks great! How do you / do you keep track of box codes?
jeromeroselli Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Semery, Very nice. I do box joints by hand, mostly because I've been building travel humidors as of late. My latest one is made of African redwood. I'll post when it's finished. Nice work Jeremy
semery74 Posted May 18, 2009 Author Posted May 18, 2009 That looks great! How do you / do you keep track of box codes? I wrote myself a Cellar Inventory Program a few years back, but first started with a spreadsheet. I used to do tasting notes on all the new boxes, but after awhile I lost interest. Oh, and I wrote the code in pencil on the side the box, up to the level that it is at.
Guest rob Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I would be inclined to do something nice like that if I wasn't so apathetic and lazy. Great job. Looks awesome.
zuma Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Nice, very nice! I envy anyone with the gift and skill to work beautifully with wood... on'ya mate, and I hope you can make those repro humis a reality. Cheers!
Jesuscookies Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Ditto..... and very nice work on the box. I would be inclined to do something nice like that if I wasn't so apathetic and lazy.
Guest blrrobinson21 Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Looks great. I dont have to worry as much as you do about storage though, for some reason I keep smoking all my sticks before they get much age on them.
