SCgarman Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Wow. One of my favorite cigars of all time scores #2. It finally gets some "respect". Will they still be readily available now, lol !!
Baldy Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 CA, people still buy and read that garbage? 1
SCgarman Posted December 17, 2015 Author Posted December 17, 2015 I would imagine more frequent the website as it is free as opposed to the rag. CA, people still buy and read that garbage?
TheLiquidGator Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 The rag can be had for free if you look around. Some of the articles and interviews are pretty good. The publication is very slick. The cigar info is poor. But, i have been getting it for free for a few years so I cannot complain. 1
gr8eman Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 The publication is very slick. The cigar info is poor. That's like Playboy only publishing pictures of ugly chicks. Somewhat defeats the whole purpose. 2
JohnS Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Yes, they've scored it Number 2, but what I found interesting was the fact that the humble and ever-reliable Bolivar Belicosos Finos scored Number 9! I can confidently say that a few members here like their consistent supply of both these cigars, with the BBF probably more so. However, has the No.1 CA cigar of the year caused issue supplies in the past for manufacturers (like the Oliva Serie V Melanio last year) and not the rest of the top ten?
skalls Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 I haven't heard of any supply issues for any other non cc in the top ten last year except for the melanio. Haven't had the figurados yet but the Churchill, robusto and petit corona of the melanio are excellent. Standard caveat is you need to like pepper and earth though.
SCgarman Posted December 17, 2015 Author Posted December 17, 2015 If you ask Rob he will probably tell you that RASS is one of his top selling cigars. Unsure of the BBF Yes, they've scored it Number 2, but what I found interesting was the fact that the humble and ever-reliable Bolivar Belicosos Finos scored Number 9! I can confidently say that a few members here like their consistent supply of both these cigars, with the BBF probably more so. NSXCIGAR Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 And the BRC was #1 in 2006...I think 2012+ production BRC is maybe just a tad better than 2005/2006... It's a shame the real greats of 2015 don't get their due here like the BBF, RyJ Churchill, CoRo, JL2 and Connie A. The only RA that got any FOH praise was the Superiores and yes, I do believe they are superior to the RASS.
wabashcr Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 One spot ahead of the CAO Flathead 60x6! 3
Fugu Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 RASS scores #2 in Cigar Aficionado cigar of the year!Tells us exactly what? 2
Bernardini Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 One spot ahead of the CAO Flathead 60x6! Lol, this being no 3 tells you all you need to know about their rankings...... 4
Colt45 Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 I've always enjoyed CA Magazine - there are all kinds of articles that aren't always found, in the same fashion, elsewhere - especially cigar related topics - farms. farmers, production, etc.... The reviews / ratings I typically pay less attention to, but at the same time, they are subjective - just like reviews / ratings anywhere. As such, I use them all as a tool..... Regarding the RASS, I've never had a good one, and have always considered them, well, crap - like the PSD4. But to be fair, I've not had any recent production of either (or BBF for that matter, which I also don't care for, along with the BRC). It's kind of funny, I've checked out Nic's great Mag - UK Cigar Scene, and always enjoy it. Even though contributors smoke any number of cigars from regions other than Cuba - I've yet to see a negative comment here in this regard. Just as I've not seen anyone crap on Jaime for joining with RP..... Whatever......... A good cigar is a good cigar. 2

Well said I enjoy the magazine as well ...as for what does it tell us Fugu.... that a bunch of guys sitting around a table and getting paid for it liked the RASS better than the other 23. Does it give any real credibility to those that have been smoking all kinds of cigars for a while probably not ...do we laugh and shake our heads of course we do ...do we talk about the top 25 we are ....will people rush and buy a RASS ..yes no maybe so ..I think most of us have peak at the top 25 ...at the very least it gives us something to talk about ..
Magpie Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 I second both of you on this topic. Any publication that promotes cigars both CC and NC is good for this hobby we all enjoy. 2
Phinz Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 For the amount of marketing $ General Cigar must have spent, they clearly plan to sell a whole lot of $3.60 CAO Flatheads (yup, that's the current price). I know print media is a dying breed, so perhaps it's time for CA to look to diversify, I'd suggest a joint venture with my favorite wine review site: http://bumwine.com. Think of all the CAO/MadDog pairing options... Yum!

While I would read the editorial contents on occasion, I couldn't care less about the rankings. I even don't look at them (that holds for any cigmag) 1
eswary Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 RASS scores #2 in Cigar Aficionado cigar of the year! Tells us exactly what? agreed. I love the magazine and enjoy reading all the articles. But after smoking enough cigars or drinking enough fine spirits you realize all the mags are subjective. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Fugu Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 I think, I’ll expand a little more on this, as I might have sounded a bit blunt (not my intention, NYCigman!), and will give an explanation: This is not about a general CA-bashing from my side. While, as I said, I don’t care about magazin rankings (for various reasons, all of which have been discussed in-depth before, here and elsewhere), my personal group of peers is the S/BOTL here, or perhaps on other forums or blogs. But certainly not a round of self-appointed journalists or whoever (becomes even worse when certain people from the industry are involved). Instead, what I do care about is what people here have to say. Und this not only because this is my peer-group - people that generally smoke cigars to the same purpose and with the same intention as I do - but also and more importantly, it is a methodological thing: Here, I can relate each and every statement to a certain person/alias. And by the time, I do get a feeling for those with whom I share a similar taste, or even distaste. And even that can only be a stimulation, a suggestion, not a general guide. But this provides me so much more valuable insight, that I really give a .... for an averaged score of an ever changing board, I often don’t even get to know. Paul
hulklogan Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 Anybody try the #1 cigar? My father le bijou?
Phinz Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 Anybody try the #1 cigar? My father le bijou? I have a box Of the Le Bijou 1922 Petit Robusto and have really enjoyed them. However, i see this small size as the pick of this blend, as I personally didn't care for the torpedo that CA placed at the top of their list, as the couple I tried were too open a draw for me (even when using a v cut). 1
kuma Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Working through a box of RASS RAE ABR 15, PSP / Hq (24:24 program) and must say they are smoking quite well. Not sure how or where to place them when compared to other (24) cigars but I can say for the money they have been worth the price charged by Rob.
forgop Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Their ratings aren't worth the paper they're printed on. It's all tied to advertising.
NSXCIGAR Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Anybody try the #1 cigar? My father le bijou? No, but I tried both the #1 and #2 2014 cigars of the year (Oliva Serie V Melanio V & the E.P. Carillo La Historia) and to be honest I'd rather have smoked my daily JLP Petit Cetros or a hand-picked clearance Monte 3 from Rob, especially considering the stupid prices for these NCs. Never put much, if any, stock in CA's ratings but I do enjoy the rag from time to time and I'm not one to knock any publication or organization that promotes our hobby. As for the RASS I'm with Colt45 and many others. I've never had what I would call a good one. I've smoked over 100 of them over 15 years and keep thinking I'll get it, but I never do. They're consistently mediocre to me. Love the RASCC though. Same with PSD4 since 97. The PSD4 used to be a powerhouse freight train of Partagas flavor, but not for a very long time. The BBF was never my thing either but recent production to me has put it right in front for the brand.
mrsgucia Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Anybody try the #1 cigar? My father le bijou? But CA said this cigar Is No.1 for Garcias..... "This cigar has an ideal combination of power and finesse to make it No. 1. It’s the second Cigar of the Year for the Garcias" Me no Garcia so I'll stick with No.2 Or No..1 for Garcias for the rest of us RASS! 1
