bassman
With the notorious inconsistancy of the MC#4, I thought this would be a perfect choice for my first PSP box. Now this review is based on smoking only a single example, but that cigar leaves me most perplexed. Wrapper as dark as night, this cigar felt solid & heavy to the touch. Fired one up to a perfect draw and a blast of strong full bodied rich flavor, which progressively got stronger as I smoked. The perplexing part is the flavors were all earth & wood, with none of the vanilla bean flavor I associate with the MC#4. If I had smoked this cigar blind, I would have guessed Punch or Bolivar, not Montecristo. Perhaps the vanilla flavor will develop in time. This is an excellent cigar- strong & rich tasting. I shall enjoy smoking these, but at least at this stage of development this cigar is quite different from any other MC#4 I've smoked over the past 15 or so years. shrink
Steve, this is very interesting. It raises the question of whether the unusual flavor profile is related to the box being selected as PSP. As Rob described in the video, he is looking not only at construction, but for oily wrappers and intense aroma. Thanks for the review.
aavkk
Thanks for the feedback Steve. Ive never been wowed by any mc#4 and in fact the only Monte that blew me away was the millenium robusto jar.
bassman
Thanks for the feedback Steve. Ive never been wowed by any mc#4 and in fact the only Monte that blew me away was the millenium robusto jar. I've smoked many boxes of MC#4s over the years- some excellent & some quite mediocre. This is a fantastic cigar, but quite different in taste from any other box good or bad.
mbrody
Interesting...maybe the PSP has got more legs and need more time? After a 5 month rest, my 08' Monte 4 that I would consider to be "standard" are absolutely delicious and full of vanilla, coffee and chocolate. They have a caramel colored wrapper, and look average, but damn they are full of flavor.
thechenman
I am a great lover of the MC4 as well...damn fine smokes. Sorry to hear that your expectatiosn weren't quite met by your PSP purchase. As pointed out above...Rob has stated before and I believe even in his recent video tha the PSP boxes should be laid down to rest for awhile.
