El Presidente
Early Plantings, Omen of Good Yields Written by Maritza Padilla Valdés Wednesday, November 04, 2009 Pinar Del Rio News. Tele Pinar. Like every year, with the arrival of November, tobacco plantings are massive in Pinar del Rio, the largest producer of the leaf in the country, in an effort by growers to begin early, at the optimal stage of the crop. This is the case of Ernesto Padilla García, a young farmer who inherited from his grandfather the love for the land and in the area of Las Cruces, in the municipality of San Luis, he has already prepared the soil for the sun variety to receive the seedlings. With the conviction that gives the knowledge transmitted by the previous generation, he prefers to begin sowings between October 25 and December 15 each year, a period favorable to maintain the control of diseases such as the so called “pata prieta” (blackish paw), the environmental necrosis and the blue mold. In the case of the blue mold, said, planting at the right time allows that when the moment favorable for the disease comes, finds a resistant plant in an advanced stage and with 50 percent of the leaves collected. He also argued that comprehensive measures are needed, such as cultural care, and minimum tillage, among others. In the current 2009-2010 campaign recently launched, Pinar del Rio will plant about a thousand cab of the Solanum, while the strategy will be the staggered planting. By mid-November is bigger the height of the different tasks of the campaign, the massive incorporation of workforce will be required then. It is expected that at crucial moments, the tobacco crop demands the contribution of about 44 thousand workers, as said to the press Alberto Linares, chief of the division in the territory. Vueltabajo brings to the industry of twist tobacco in the country, about 50 percent of exportable layers and the totality of the capes.
