phxkev
Cigar Aficionado's Cigar Insider today published a "blind review" of the Cohiba Gran Reserva. If anyone here is a subscriber and can post it here, it should lead to some interesting discussion. Rob said on another thread, anyone trying it before March 2010 is in for a letdown. So we'll see what they have to say (not that their reviews are worth much). Suckling already rated it 100 non-blind.
Bartolomeo
Summary of their 3 Cohiba Reviews: Siglo VI Gran Reserva 92 POINTS 5 7/8" x 52 £85.00 Humidor Selection Covered in an attractive, tawny-colored wrapper, this cigar is very toasty in character, balanced out by rich coffee notes, hints of leather and a floral finish. Body: Medium Siglo VI Tubo 91 POINTS 5 7/8" x 52 £29.00 Humidor Selection A cigar with an attractive, rich golden wrapper but an uneven cap. It draws evenly leaving solid, steady notes of tobacco, wood and leather on the palate. Body: Medium Siglo VI 90 POINTS 5 7/8" x 52 £26.90 The wrapper on this cigar is a bit bumpy, but the cap is skillfully applied. It burns evenly, and the smoke is woody and cedary with leather notes and a savory finish. Body: Medium Summary : Perhaps the most anticipated cigar of the year, Habanos S.A. has released the Cohiba Siglo VI as a Gran Reserva which means that, unlike the standard production Siglo VI, its tobacco comes from a 2003 crop. Only 5,000 numbered boxes of 15 cigars were released. This cigar scored 92 points and retails in the United Kingdom for £85, which translates to $138 per cigar, should you find a retailer willing to sell them individually. For comparitive purposes and market persepctive, we tested a Cohiba Siglo VI tubo, which, at a bit more than a third of the price, scored a point lower. The score and tasting note for the regular Siglo VI was taken from the October issue of Cigar Aficionado.
samb
I honestly cant image lighting $138 on fire, lol. It would be hard to resist a free one though.
Stalebread
. . . Rob said on another thread, anyone trying it before March 2010 is in for a letdown . . . March 2010 is not so very far away. If I had one I'd wait that long or maybe even a little longer.
FrankBlack
I was going to light one up on my birthday at the end of March - good timing!
thechenman
I've managed to get my hands on three of these babies. Was going to spark one at X-Mas, but after reading Rob's post will likely wait until spring before smoking the first. I'll post some pics and my thoughts when I do. To be honest though...my initial opinion based solely on the appearance of the cigars is that they really are no different than a regualr Sigo VI. The color of the wrapper is the same. The construction is very good, but not perfect, and the aroma is very similar. The only truly discenrable difference is the second band. Let's hope at their price point, the GRs don't disappoint. stargazer14
. Let's hope at their price point, the GRs don't disappoint. I think it may be the price point that does make it disappoint!
gfoster
I can't even comprehend spending that much money on a cigar. I wouldn't be able to enjoy it, I'd be sitting there the whole time thinking "how much did *that* puff cost? How about *that* one?" If I spent that much on a signle cigar my wife wouldn't even have a chance to murder me in my sleep... I'd likely die of buyer's remorse long before she ever found out. -- Gary F.
