Freddy Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Sorry to repeat my question, but it seems to have gotten lost on another thread. I have a wine fridge (in which I keep wine, duh); the temperature is set to about 55°. There are a couple of empty shelves on which I could store cigars. Question: What is the lowest temperature at which it is safe to keep cigars? (I'm not concerned with the humidity since I can handle that issue). Thanks for your attention.
Colt45 Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Freddy, personally I think that while not completely outside what might be considered acceptable, 55˚ borders on the cool end of acceptability. The main concern would be the slowing down or possible halting of the natural maturation process. I'm not a scientist, so don't take my word as any kind of gospel. Otherwise, cooler temps should do no harm to your cigars.
Taino Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 If Rh is really not an issue, temperature is not a big problem. If you store your cigars at 12ºC (a typical wine storage temp) they will be just fine.
samb Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Im pretty sure that the lower the temp (60-55) will not hurt the cigar at all, but it will slow down the aging process. The cigars will age at 55, but it will take longer.
PigFish Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 As a side note I would never store cigars with wine. Ever see a corked bottle leak? A tablespoon of red wine can go a long way to damaging your cigars in a sealed environment very quickly. Pairing and blending are two different things! Good luck.

In 20 years of collecting wine I have never had this problem. If wine is kept under the right conditions (temperature and humidity) no leaking ever occurs. Nor have I ever heard of this happening to any serious wine collector.

tugboat Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 One thing I have learned about storing cigars anyway. No matter how much you spend on keeping them safe and secure........ Never say Never!
armedak Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Agreed, and given the high value of some cuban cigars, I would suggest it might not be a bad investment to buy a wine cooler and dedicate it to just cigars and then you could set it at a temperature optiumum for aging cigars. Just my two cents!
