Semi-Regular FOH Poker Tourni?

I participated in the recent Poker tourni that the Prez was so generous to put up a box of aged punch coronas for the winner. Although I got my arse handed to me - especially on some bad beats like a full house on the river - I had a blast! Rob also generously puts up a nice stick every week for some more play. This got me thinking, Rob doesn't always have to front a stick - maybe we can feed the kitty ourselves and have at it...

Is anyone interested in having a semi-regular tourni - say bi-weekly or so - where we all put up two habanos as a buy in? Winner takes all. As we are all some civilized gents, we will be on our honor, and responsible for sending the sticks out to whomever, wherever. This, I know, may pose an issue, as we are spread out pretty well across this fine orb of ours.

We can set up a time that works best for most (the 11am Brisbane seems to work out well). Within a couple days prior, the first nine members to claim entry (if we even get that much) will state their intent to play and their wager. Any late comers can either be fill-ins for no shows or be put first on the next tourni. If enough people show up, perhaps 1st gets the majority of the winnings and second can get a few, as well. Straighforward poker tourni from there...

This is a rough proposal, and will need some work, so, anyone want to help me figure it out?

Funny I was thinking the same thing, as I just wanted to play more friendly poker.

Maybe it is a once a month event? One table, winner take all. We could also consider one stick buy in instead of two, as it may keep the entries full.

I would lay this on the prez first to make sure he is okay with us setting up our own tournies. Aside from that I would be interested in a once a week, biweek, monthly, type ONE cigar entry winner take all sit and go.

I did run this by the prez in private prior to posting. He's all good with it. We just need to set up some parameters that we're all comfortable with and then have at it.

I'm good with the one smoke wager. I figure we should let another few days pass for more feedback and then we'll give it a go.

We used to do this back in the early days, long before El Pres was putting up a stick every Friday. As I recall the typical wager was three mid-range sticks. I think it was halted so people could practice before the first tournament, and nobody was really too enthusiastic about rekindling it afterward.

When El Pres has a stick on the line the Friday table typically gets nine or ten players. When no prize is offered it struggles to get five. I think you’ll encounter this same issue if you have wagers.

You should also consider that while this is ostensibly an Australian board, a pretty major slab of the members here are American. This is particularly true of the poker players, as any Australian is playing on Friday morning, very much during business hours. Regular Australian players, therefore, wind up suffering shipping costs much more than their US counterparts.

Finally, there’s no real way to ensure that people send the wagers. I don’t think we ever had an issue with this though - FOH is a fairly honourable bunch.

All that said, best of luck to you - it is an excellent excuse to send each other interesting cigars and share camaraderie. I don’t play in the Friday games much anymore, but if you get this off the ground and I happen to be available for a game that day, I’ll participate.

Thanks for the input, Prez! This all sounds reasonable. To clarify, members should claim their seat when the notice posted up that a tourni will take place, and then claim their wager when they sit down at the table, as play begins. We'll start with a one cigar wager and perhaps "raise the stakes" at a later date if anyone is interested. Sound about right?

Maybe we'll give this a shot for Sunday Aug 9? I'll post the notice later in the week.
