Bighead33 Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Purchased a 30 cigar Xikar humidor last week. So far so good except my hydrometer reads 72-74% RH. I am using the Xikar PG system. 1) Is the extra humidity a big deal (it's been quite humid in NY lately)? 2) If it is, in fact, bad for my smokes what can I do to remedy it? Thanks, -Cliff
Colt45 Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 For me, 72-74 is a bit high - I prefer 63-67. Higher humidity can cause draw and burn problems, along with muddled flavors. Having said that, if you prefer how your cigars smoke at that humidity, there's nothing wrong with that. Personally, I'd ditch the foam and pg humidifiers and go with beads / bead pucks. The pucks were developed by our own n2advnture. If you're interested, checkout his site - www.cigarmony.com. Also, if you do a search here for humidity, beads, etc, you'll find a number of helpful threads. Don't hesitate to ask any more questions - I'm sure the members here will have more advice.
rckymtn22 Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Go with the beads, I have them and they are pretty well maintenance free. Buy a pound and a couple extra bags for the next humidor that you buy.
tyler4178 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 I concur. I recently replaced the PG humidifiers in my two desktops with beads. It has made a noticeable difference in RH control, ease of maintenance, and the (nominal) cost of PG solution.
sounddust Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 2) Beads give you extra control, so if you feel that the 70% beads don't give you a good smoke, then the 65% beads are there for you to recondition them over a few days(I have tried this using a Cigar Caddy).
Taino Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Beads and throw away any hygrometers you have... be freeeee!!
Guest rob Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 I would have replied saying beads... but I was beaten to it.
Stormin691 Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 This weather here in NY really has been for the birds.. Its like we are becoming the new Seattle!
tucomapache Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 I just switched to the Puck from the Diamond Crown system. Puck is way better...
Bighead33 Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 My 65% RH Puck just arrived. Looking foward to it doing the trick. BTW, my 30 count humidor is all of a sudden too small after two weeks. I'm looking in to a Vinotemp 12 bottle with beads or possible active humidification. I keep my humidor in my office where the air conditioning of off on the weekends. Temp spike to 80 degrees F! Has anyone tried the desktop Vinotemp humidor with temperature control. Looks like it might be the ticket as the price is right and it seems to do what I need it too. Might be too small however.
Bighead33 Posted July 2, 2009 Author Posted July 2, 2009 The Puck seems to be doing the trick. 65-70% RH. Thanks to everyone for their helpful advice.
