It presents another side of the story, but I dare say that, as a cigarette smoker, I'd love to quit but find it extremely difficult, especially with another smoker in the house. It definitely has a detrimental affect on my quality of life. I don't buy into the whole secondhand smoke theory (it defies common sense) but I do believe that cigarette smoking increases health risks, if not lung cancer then certainly things such as emphysema, lung capacity, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, etc.

Just as the anti-smokers take things to extremes, we need to be careful that we don't go as far in the opposite direction. Jackson gives lots of anecdotal examples in his essay, but facts and figures are sorely lacking.

With that said, I do believe that cigars, pipes and second hand smoke have a minimal (if any) effect on one's health and I strongly believe that it should be my choice if, when and where I smoke.

Great, if somewhat superficial read. I also went to www.forces.org to check up new stuff and found this article under the heading "scientific evidence":

A response to the crisis of epidemiology | John Dunn, MD (http://www.forces.org/Scientific_Portal/evidence_viewer.php?id=413)

This fool knows little about science, I'd say, hawking supiciously creationist-like views. Evolutionary theory a trans-science, indeed... Unable to observe evolution... B) If there is to be a battle against junk science they should clean up their own back yard at forces.org.
