kilroy Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Okay so dry boxing for a day is a favorite thing of mine but its getting near summer and here in Florida we have 75-80% humidity. Any idea how to dry box a cigar while living in a rainforest?

Guest rob Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Maybe put dried 60% beads (or litter) in the box as well? Or perhaps put the box closed in a fridge for a day?
ironpeddler Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 I guess you could use the silica beads in reverse, like they use them when items are packaged and shipped from overseas. If you get un-trained beads or 100% silica kitty litter, that would absorb moisture. Get a small humi, put in the silica beads and a hygrometer, add your cigars...and monitor the whole setup day to day. Periodically take out the cigar and roll it between your fingers and see what kind of progress your cigars are making. It would be a lot of experimentation and trial and error....but that's the fun part! Good Luck and let us know what you come up with.
FlyFishingDude Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Put one inside a zip lock plastic bag with the corner (about 1/2 inch) unsealed and put it in the freezer for about 15 minutes, the cold will suck the moisture right out of the bad boy. Adjust fire as necessary shorter or longer times in the freezer. Keep an eye on it so you don't turn it into a tent stake.
sounddust Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 If 70-80's rainforest then I must be living in a swimming pool(90% up). I use a wine fridge as the default humidity is usually 55-60, perfect for adjusting the wet weather to your liking.
Rogers72 Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 In my house in South Carolina, it usually stays around 55-60% inside during the summer with the AC on even when it is 90-100% outside. I just use an old cedar cab on my desk for 12-24hrs when needed. I keep my humidor around 65-66%.
Taino Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 If you have a room with AC that is not ventilated much, that should do the trick. AC dries the air. Also you can put silica cristals in an air tight tupperware. If the cristal don't do the work after a while, dry them with a hair drier and they'll be working again.
El Presidente Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I am with Taino. An Airconed room normally runs 50 RH around here in summer.
kilroy Posted May 25, 2009 Author Posted May 25, 2009 Normally I keep the porch door open in my office to allow for the breeze to flow in and allow my exterminators (the cats) go out to the patio to find things to kill and eat. So I closed up the door for a couple of days and put an already cut Series Du Conn #2 that seemed tight drawn into my top desk drawer to air out in the A/C. 2 days of A/C drying did the trick. I went out and smoked it this afternoon on the deck outside and it was fabulous. Thanks everyone for the help.
cabaiguan juan Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 So given that its really humid there, do you even need to use a humidor or could you get by with just leaving your cigars laying out on a desk in an un-A/C'ed (ie humind) room?
kilroy Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 I dont trust the humidity swings... At night the A/C doesn't swing on as much plus we never have the thermostat under 73 and I prefer the safety of 65 degrees for my cigars. So its in the coolidor with all of them!
