first, many thanks to all for the comments and support. it has been greatly appreciated. much of yesterday was just spent in the house watching the waters rise. couldn't concentrate on work or much else so it was good to be able to follow the forum.

thanks also to those who rang soooooooo early???

by late arvo yesterday, i had packed the car and moved it away from the house and tossed in a few blankets in case i had to spend the night there. plus a bottle of old tokay - well what the hell else was i going to do? priorities? packed my computer, camera, wallet, passport and fly fishing gear. as it was, i waited up till about 2.30 watching the waters, with my torch. slept on the couch till 4 and then as they had receded quite a bit, went to bed.

the photos i posted yesterday morning were a little premature - the 'before' shots if you like. the water came way past that. it was really quite scary. the force it went past was amazing and terrifying. saw logs some three foot thick and others 50 foot long just whizz by like matchsticks.

touch wood, no real damage. i have a new log under the house, some tiling has sunk, but i never go there anyway, a post buried in concrete by previous owners has been ripped out. could have been so much worse. just hoping that we don't get the do-over again tonight. don't know how a second dose would go.

spoke to a bloke from up the road. he'd measured 14 inches over the last 24 hours. that is a fair whack of rain.

here are a few more photos.

to give you an idea of how high the water got, the first photo is one just taken. the second two are the same thing about this time yesterday. if you look at the very centre of the first one, you'll see the tip of a tree which comes from the left of the shot and is sitting high above the water. the second two shots have the same tip of tree just above the water. at its peak, it was just under.

Take good care mate.

Are there crocodiles?

long way from the crocs. plenty of snakes though hopefully a few of them washed away. the platypus might have struggled.

Ayala's place - his sofa is always ready to be slept on......

Ayala's slept on that couch enough times. :D

Although Rob did call me last night concerned for Ken as he told him to sleep in the car incase the house got washed away. Asked me to call him and check up on Ken, I was going to do that till I got home and found under my house flooded so I said stuff Ken, I have bigger problems.

KG, good to see you're OK. In the future, don't hesitate to go over to Ayala's place - his sofa is always ready to be slept on......

problem with that is, as far as i can ascertain, he gets relegated to it most nights.

Ken,

Glad to hear there is no significant damage to your home.

I'm praying for you and all Aussie's that the rain goes away for a while.

Take Care.

Tom

smithy, i hope you didn't have too many problems and if i can do anything to help, you know you only have to ask. always a spot on my couch for you (and i normally lock my door at night, not just because you are there).

Excuse late reply Ken, Lets just say I share your feelings about Telstra! One month, no internet at all...

Looks like you had a bit of a scare and were very very lucky. Mrs Smooth works in insurance and some of the stories from that 24hr period have been harrowing to say the least. I myself had to drive through water up to the door sills of my car, not by choice I might ad. And my street here which has probably a 30deg incline was a river about 6 inches deep running down hill!! Certainly many of us QLD'ers have a gained a great respect for mother nature recently!

Its hard to describe just how hard and prolonged the rain was. Never seen anything like it...
