Is aftertaste the same as finish?

As in:

This cigar has no aftertaste.

or

This cigar has a short finish.

If not, what's the difference?

In my opinion, they are not quite the same. For me finish is the flavors and sensations I perceive as I exhale / immediately after exhalation.

Often but not always, you can taste certain elements as you first draw in, others as you hold the smoke, and still something different at exhale.

For me aftertaste is what I taste in between draws, or even more so, after I've finished the cigar.

For me:

Aftertaste is after I am done with a cigar. Some cigars have an acrid after taste, I find this problem with nicaraguans in particular. Some have an aftertaste that gives you fond memories and makes you want to light another one up.

Finish is the tail end of flavor/sensation after each draw. I usually get it in the nose/top of mouth. Its where a lot of the more subtle flavors hit I think. Same for whiskey, wine or beer, nuances come thru with exhaling thru the nose.

You exhale beer through your nose ? ! ! ?

OK, wine and whiskey I can understand, but beer?

I'm in agreement with SJack on this one.

What I have read above are some pretty good replies. I tend to lump the two together but recognize the separation of the two. Good job guys! -Piggy

Great reply guys

You can have a short finish (after each draw/exhale) but a long aftertaste (after the cigar completed).

That must be some party trick...

Can you have a long finish after each draw/exhale? And is that more desirable than a short finish?

Is a long aftertaste generally thought to be desirable?

Desirable only after a desired taste :P

I have experienced a long aftertaste that reminded me of the time I drank a beer that had expired for 2 years.

...and to get the real flavor I stand on my head and pour it into my nose and breath out my mouth.

No, just move the air out thru the nose. There are some amazingly nuanced and complex beers out there.
