Chavez is the rattlesnake of latin American politics. The rise of Obama must be a thorn in his side as he attempts to cobble together central and south American Govt's into a leftist power base.

This will be an intersting political battle over the next few years.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Tuesday that he is preparing plenty of verbal “artillery” for his first encounter with President Barack Obama at an upcoming summit.

Chavez, long a fierce critic of Washington, said he expects that the future of U.S. relations with Latin America will begin to take shape at April’s summit of leaders from across the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago.

“Our artillery is being prepared. There’s going to be good artillery,” Chavez said during a televised Cabinet meeting.

“What will Mr. Obama come with? I don’t know. We’re going to see. We’ll see what the pitcher throws,” Chavez said.

Chavez said that immediately before the Americas summit in Trinidad, he will host leaders of nations in his Bolivarian Alternative trade pact for talks in Caracas on April 16. He also said he plans talks with the leader of Paraguay, and possibly Uruguay, before the summit.

Chavez called the U.S. embargo against Cuba “absurd and stupid,” saying he hopes to see the new U.S. administration define its stance on the issue.

The socialist leader also called it wrong for Cuba to be excluded from the Americas summit, saying that issue “has to be discussed.”

“Cuba is in Latin America. It’s no longer the Cuba that was kicked out of the OAS by those governments subordinated to the Pentagon,” Chavez said. “With what right, for example, am I going to go to a summit where all of Latin America is there ... and Cuba isn’t there? Why?”

Cuba was expelled from the OAS in 1962 after member nations said its communist regime went against OAS principles.

Briefly switching into English, Chavez said the upcoming summit will be “very interesting.”

Read this last week did not post it as i really think the more he talks the more of an ass he is.

Cuba and America have to fix there problems them selves and Chavez should mind his business !!!

He will lose alot if Cuba and American make up and end the embargo as he uses that to fuel his Gov there...

The last thing Chavez wants is for the US to have good relations again with Cuba.

And Cuba is in the Caribbean and is 90 miles off of South Florida Chavez need to get a map and learn some Geography.

Cuba is not part of Latin America if anything its more part of Spain as there is more influence from there than any other country in that region. Its more European than any other country in all of that area..

I have to take issue with some of the points you raised Jimmy.

The Cubans in the main hate the Spanish :surprised: They are proudly Cubano and see themselves as neither American, Caribbean, Latin American. The Argentinians see themselves as more Spanish than the Spanish themselves.

Chavez in Cuba is referred almost universally as Fidels Maricon. They don't like him nor trust him.

Venezuelan oil (at low prices and Contra deals on health) lubricates Cuba's economy.

Venezuealn health would collapse without Cuban doctors.

Chavez himself uses a Cuban body guard unit.

It has been a long and mutually beneficial process (politically).

I think you will see Chavez cobble together a union of Leftist governments as a trading block. The greatest fear is not militarily but economically as each of these countries re-nationalize industries along Chavez's preferred model.

It is the primary influence of the culture and language of the Iberian peninsula that make Latin America what it is, it not the interrelations between the countries south of the Rio Grande, as each country has its on "criollo" culture and it own relations with the Old World... Cuban on its own has helped to define Latin America as it is now through its influence in culture, cuisine, music, literature, etc... Cuba "more European"? or Spanish... Nah... Yes it retains an old archaic Spanish tradition that dates back to Colonial days, but you can find that in Venezuela and Colombia, in Argentina, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Peru...

Cuba is part of the heart and soul of Latin America, ranking up there with Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile... and I reckon Puerto Rico should be included...

I think you are right there. My house hold is not keen on Chavez as I don't like him and my wife, a Colombiana, does not like him for the stuff he instigates with Colombia. He is a narcissistic power monger who is very defensive by nature. Why would he use the word "artillery" with a new US president who is obviously interested in mending poor relations. Has he met Obama? Does he even read Obamas stances on foreign relations?

He needs to open his fist to hands that are ready shake to loosely paraphrase Obama.

Chavez isn't a rattlesnake. He's a buffoon. I know that Obama is too cool to do it, but nothing would delight me more than to see Obama taunt Chavez in public, while laughing his inimitable laugh. Exactly the same way he made fun of McCain, while John turned red and veins stood out on his neck.
