Torpo Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 This is my first post aside from an intro. I took a break from smoking about 6 years ago, got a box of MC2's this Xmas, started in and had forgotten how much I love habanos. I've been pouring over this site for 5 weeks and there is a wealth of experience here, good people. Over the past 2 months I've been tasting some new productions of old favorites and found a few new favorites. Even found an old humi with some assorted Cohiba's, R&J's, a Saint Luis Rey that had developed an aria of toasted flower petals and others. They had been dry boxed (by accident) for 6 years;... sort a like me! I "revived" them as well as possible and the results have been surprising. Hey, does smoking these make me a necrophiliac??? ... Oh well, I' ve done worse. Just opened a box of Cohiba Robustos JUN. 08. Nice, very nice. Will try to remand them to the humidor for as long as possible. Must smoke a couple first. See you around. Oh, I get the urge to smoke a chocolate pie every now and then. What do you guys like smoking for this little fixation? Any suggestions?
Tampa1257 Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Oh, I get the urge to smoke a chocolate pie every now and then. What do you guys like smoking for this little fixation? Any suggestions? The 6 year Dry Boxing is IMHO a bit excessive, but who knows, they could have been resting in 100% Rh in the beginning............. For the Chocolate fixation, I would recommend Vegas Robaina Unicos or Famosos. They are often described as having the chocolaty goodness essence.
Torpo Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 Thanks, I'll try the Famosos. What surprises me is that any of them survived at all, while a few were actually enjoyable.
shrink Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Welcome to the fast lane, O torpid one. As for chocolate pie, how about a chocolate chip cookie? Just add some black pepper to that mix, and you've got the Hoyo Regalos EL. P.S. I wouldn't use the term "remand" around here. We've got some attorneys in the house. You aren't one of THOSE, are you?

PigFish Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 SLR's have both a chocolate aroma and taste to me. Add the commonly found "dried fruit" aspect, often cherry, and you will have a cordial that even your sister (proverbial) might enjoy at Sunday tea with biscuits! -Piggy

And what SLR vitola would be your preference, Piggy?
PigFish Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 LOL...with biscuits, no less!! And what SLR vitola would be your preference, Piggy? These days I am currently only stocking and smoking 4 SLR vitolas. If you wish to try a good SLR the current ('07) vintage of the PC is a nice cigar. I am currently also smoking '01 Serie A's as they are still around and they are a wonderful medium bodied cigar generously flavored with mocha. I have also enjoyed the SLR Corona and I have at least one box hiding out somewhere but it has been a long time since I smoked any. I still have SLR lonsdales but I was not really happy with my last box, '03s I believe and I can't recommend those. Previously I was enjoying '98 SLR lonsdales and those were wonderful cigars. Many swoon over the SLR DC. They are too mild for me and not my cup of tea. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the SLR tour, Piggy. Very nice of you and helpful to me... I will hungrily pursue! I recently smoked a Lonsdale with some age (late 90's) and it was wonderful. Care to weigh in on the new Serie A? More...please!
PigFish Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Thanks for the SLR tour, Piggy. Very nice of you and helpful to me... I will hungrily pursue! I recently smoked a Lonsdale with some age (late 90's) and it was wonderful. Care to weigh in on the new Serie A?More...please! In all fairness to you all that I can do is comment about my likes. It is really hard to "recommend" cigars to others unless you know their tastes and I don't even know if you would like what I like. You see I admit being the (one of the) 'black pigs' around here because I don't often fall prey to H SA's line of bigger is better. In a nutshell I don't often smoke the popular mainstream cigars. I often confine myself to 42 ring and smaller cigars, but that does not mean that I don't occasionally buy, smoke or have never smoked larger ring cigars. On the SLR A front I only remembered the mocha flavor because I smoked one about 7-10 days ago. Albeit not lately I do often smoke a cigar a day at least so I don't remember the nuances of a cigar unless I make notes about it. All I can really recall about the cigar is that it was firmly packed (common with the vintage) very rich, somewhat monotonic but overall an above average to excellent cigar. I don't recall the cigar being peppery or overly unctuous and it did have short pleasant finish with limited complexity. What I enjoyed about it was the fact that it was monotonic. So if I use words without negative connotations lets say it was consistent; in a pleasing and satisfying way. I can't really expand on flavors because I don't remember! Sorry. I do know this. That persons who trust my palate would enjoy this cigar.
Torpo Posted March 3, 2009 Author Posted March 3, 2009 The SLR's in that box are a thing of beauty. I'll look out for the 01's. I smoked Cohiba Lanceros 10-12 years ago. They were one of my go to's when I "needed" the chocolate. I haven't smoked enough of the recent production to reach an opinion, but the ones I've tasted have been a little disappointing. I'm waiting for a few Genios that I've ordered, and will look into the Piramides. Thanks guys.
