josie67 Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Today I decided to break out one of my Taboada Double Robustos ( 7 1/4 " x 53 ). I have to say this cigar looks like a work of art: Beautiful dark color, no veins, firm, with a pigtail at the head and a flagged foot. Rofolfo Taboada rolls these the old school way, "en tubado", meaning that each individual leaf is rolled into a tube, unlike the normal way of folding each leaf like an accordion. It is a slower method of rolling, but it ensures that that the draw will be perfect every time. And the draw sure was perfect. I lit it up and was immediately rewarded with medium-full bodied volumes of smoke. Lots of cocoa/chocolaty flavors with just a touch of sweetness in the first 1/3. About an inch in the sweetness disappeared, but the cocoa flavors remained all the way to the end. The second 1/3 was pretty much like the first 1/3, with the body now into a medium body. The odd thing about this cigar is that it didn't develop anything really new all the way down, but you know what? It had already developed fully right from the start, so it didn't really need to go anywhere else. The last 1/3 picked up a bit in intensity and stayed in the medium-full body range, but it developed a richness that just coated the mouth. the finish was HUGE here with flavors lingering on and on. I felt like Pavlov's dog hitting the bell for a reward. It was so tasty that I felt like an addict continuously hitting it over and over. It was a large cigar , and it took me about an hour and twenty minutes, but for any normal person, it should have lasted a good 2 hours. The draw was flawless, the flavors were intoxicating without being overly powerful, and the burn was razor sharp with a beautiful, snowy white ash. All in all, a fantastic cigar which rates in the top 10 all time for me. It was pricy, and for that reason alone, I couldn't smoke it every day, but for a special occasion, this is WELL worth the price. I truly enjoyed it. Note the last picture is a Romeo Y Julieta Churchill flanked on either side by 2 Taboada Double Robustos.
rckymtn22 Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Great review. Would like to see a picture of the end of the cigar to see what an "old school roll" looks like
josie67 Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 Your wish is my command. The picture below is of the foot of the cigars...notice the great flagging, especially the one on the left where the foot is completely covered. To get an idea of how nice it looks, click on the picture to get it full sized, and then click on it a second time, and you will get to see the great detail.

jamesward Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Nice write up. I have never heard of the maker before. Where are they from?
cvm4 Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Nice write up. I have never heard of the maker before. Where are they from? Taboada is a master roller from Cuba who is supposedly retired. Lately, he's gone in and out of retirement. The cigars are of cuban origin and custom rolled.
SmokinAl Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Nice one pal, looks like a good way to spend an hour or two.
