Freefallguy Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 On returning to the States I found my Xikar 15 stick travel humidor (very nice Mark, thank you: Cigarmony.com) had become a vacu-dor! The decompression on descent left the Xikar tighter than Ken’s wallet. I had to take a brass mallet and gently tap the latches to open it. Has anyone else had this happen? Any solutions?
Roy R. Frush Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Buy a bigger traveldor! The next size up has the pressure release knob.
PartagasIV Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I've used my cigar box opener and a screwdriver on my Xikar 15ct to equalize the pressure and allow it to open...my jumbo size Cigar Caddy has a pressure valve you can open; seems the Xikars don't.
mkz Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Had this happen to my 15-ct caddy when I went to Mexico last year. If your travel humidor doesnt have one of them "pressure nobs" make shure to have something in your pockets (coin, keys, screwdriver) to bend it open with in case of an customs-inspection. The chance to end up with an grumpy customs officer (Mexican for example) and an almost unopenable box is possible and not so funny. Have heard that it might be avoided if you have the box open during take-off and landning. I havent tried it and dont know if this is bolloxs or not...
n2advnture Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 This is very common when changing altitudes. If you look at the front, there is a small notch where the lid meets the body. This is designed for a quarter or dime to fit into the slot so you can pry it open, releasing the vacuum. In the larger count travel humidors, there is a release valve on the front that you turn counter clockwise. Just make sure to close the valve after the vacuum is released. I hope this helps ~Mark
Jimmy2 Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 You beat me to it Mark....Good work and good info to those who dont know...
