Severe weather warning for parts of country

By MICHAEL FOX - Stuff.co.nz | Thursday, 12 February 2009

The MetService has issued severe weather warnings for large areas of the country today, with some areas expected to cop the heaviest falls of the summer.

Parts of the country from the Westland Ranges to Waikato and the Coromandel Peninsula can expect heavy rain – up to 180mm – and people should be prepared for streams and rivers to rise quickly.

This included the central North Island high country and Bay of Plenty, and also from Canterbury to Wairarapa.

The MetService said they expected a trough and deepening low to move southeast over central New Zealand today bringing moist subtropical air.

The heaviest rainfalls are expected on the upper slopes of Mt Taranaki and Mt Ruapehu.

The latest warning follows flooding in Manawatu and Wanganui earlier this week. A deluge on Tuesday caused stormwater systems to fail and overflow. The rain eased by nightfall with most water receding but council workers spent yesterday clearing sumps, checking for damage and getting sandbags ready for a downpour today.

Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws said the increased volume from the headwaters of the Whanganui River could mean a quick rise in water level. Yesterday the river was at 1.6 metres at Pipiriki. The council's first response is triggered when the river level reaches eight metres.

Council staff were preparing for possible flooding but residents could help by clearing house gutters and removing leaves from sumps, Mr Laws said. "Let's not take any chances the next 24 hours could get rough."

Damage from surface flooding on Tuesday had been minimal, authorities reported. Palmerston North fire chief Rodger Calder said seven trucks attended 60 flood-related calls, though only a few houses were affected by water.

Police asked drivers to drive carefully and be aware of surface flooding, however, several minor crashes were reported across the Wellington region and a slip blocked part of State Highway 1 near Paekakariki on the Kapiti Coast.
