Spartan Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 So I'm at a Holiday party (cigarless) enjoying a taste of Macallan 18yr. when a fellow cigar enthusiast proudly passes around a box of Cohiba Siglo's. He tells his story of how he acquired the box while on vacation in the DR for 65 bucks. The box comes my way and it is bad, I mean really bad..glass top & the worst looking counterfeits I've ever seen. He hands out a stick to several of the guys (including me) and everyone then proceeds to fire up these abominations. I'm standing there thinking no way am I smoking this thing but at the same time I really do not want to insult the guy...what to do? long story short I thanked the guy and gave the excuse that since it was a "Cuban" I would like to save it in my collection. Funny thing is there one other dude who obviously knew the deal but already committed to smoking the cigar...the look on his face was priceless. What say you on proper etiquette for such a situation?
mkz Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Slap him in the face with the truth (or tell him gently). Thats what I would have done. I also like to rip away bandages really fast...

What say you on proper etiquette for such a situation? your first instinct and reaction was the correct one. i could see a situation like that turing into a "you dont know what your talking about barrage) on the same line a very close friend of mine, (slowly becoming world famous as an investor who has been down to the Titanic as well as joined the russian space program to become the first paying civilain in space and so on, has come back from cuba a few times wth boxes for me, bought off the street and clearly fake, i told him they were fake but thanked him anyway and recieved my gift with glee. i gave some of these to visitors to my home who saw my cigars and Wanted to try (the type who would take 5 puffs of a Cohiba DC EL and butt it our like a cigarette) but having opened a few of the fakes up and finding things that were not to pleasant i threw the rest out.
bobsled Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 You handled it well. Don't say a word, nobody likes to be told they were fooled. Unless this fool is your good friend, at which point you would wanna give him the link to FOH......
Colt45 Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 What say you on proper etiquette for such a situation? I agree with Sje - given the situation, I think you did the right thing. Perhaps if you'd been able to speak with him privately later, but otherwise no need for a potential holiday fracas.
aavkk Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 I think you handled it brilliantly. There is really no need to kill the great mood that everyone was probably in. If it was just the two of you then I think it would have been appropriate to tell him the truth. After all, it was only 65 bucks.
Tampa1257 Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 What? You did not pull out your own box of real Cohiba's and start passing around real Cuban Cigars? Under the circumstances, you did all that you could. Your friend sounds like he wanted to impress everyone with his prowlness and ability to show off. Typically not the type of person that buys authentic Cuban cigars. May I suggest that you "Regift" the fake Cohiba back to him over the holidays so that you don't contaminate your humidor!
pnutbutrsangwich Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Order another drink and light it up lol! I wouldn't even take it home, but I'd light it up out of pure, morbid curiosity.

Spartan Posted December 5, 2008 Author Posted December 5, 2008 Thanks for the input guys. The fellow is a acquaintance and a rather nice guy. I've smoked NC cigars with him before and he always smokes good stuff. I can't blame the dude, I guess he just doesn't know about CC. as much as I wanted to enlighten him, I don't know him well enough to share my (limited) insight. As for the infamous "cohiba" it met it's fate along the FDR Drive sometime around 11pm last nite.
