perfectform Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Last evening with friends, we enjoyed a bottle of 2004 Two Hands Brave Faces that was had for a mere $20. Accompaniment was in the form of an 07 Partagas 898V and then a fresh and young 08 Juan lopez No 2...I actually felt like I was doing the Prez's duty (though it wasn't 9 in the morning ) I know Two Hands makes some other out of this world wines (for a premium price). However in my humble opinion, you cannot find a better value than in this wine, vintage not withstanding. Gotta love what the Aussie's are doing these days with their shirazs and cabs. Keep up the good work mates!
WYPirate Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 I concur! I had been solely a California wine drinker (Cab Savs, Pinot Niors, mainly). Then I tried some of the Aussie wine avail in my area. Great stuff, even better price points, can't beat the value either. Need to do some more exploring of the Down-Under offerings.

Colt45 Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 I haven't been drinking much Aussie wine as of late, though I used to drink quite a bit. I'll try it if I see it in my travels - I don't recall reading about it in K. Gargett's book, so it must be good......

stargazer14 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 So.. I saw this thread, jumped in the car with the intention of picking my self up a fine wine to go with dinner and a smoke, all for $20 or so and... Hello! my discount wine store sells 2004 Two Hands Brave Faces for $48 ! you guys caused a run and now they jacked the price up!
Ken Gargett Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 They obviously hadn't sent Ken any tasting Freebies Two Hands are Great wines. Some of my favourite mid tier priced beverages. a typical tacky jibe from capt wiggum. where is the christmas spirit? two hands make a wide range of wines, some excellent ones included. they perhaps focus moe off shore than here but still plenty around. a lot of our smaller producers make wines solely for the offshore market and we just do not see them.

That is a very interesting point, one I did not realize. Does that apply to the other great Aussie producers like Mollydooker, Clarendon Hills and R wines etc??

Hello! my discount wine store sells 2004 Two Hands Brave Faces for $48 ! you guys caused a run and now they jacked the price up! Wow man, sorry about that What did you end up purchasing? I may also suggest some of the wines made by the R winery like the ***** Grenache, Evil Cabernet, Boarding Pass Shiraz or Strong Arms Shiraz. I have had all of them and they are great values as well.
Ken Gargett Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 That is a very interesting point, one I did not realize. Does that apply to the other great Aussie producers like Mollydooker, Clarendon Hills and R wines etc?? mollydooker i know of as i know sparky and have followed what he does. makes some cracker wines but in recent years, has concentrated very much on the usa. not sure if we could get them here - i suspect tiny quantities if one looked hard. sparky is a great character if you ever get to meet him. i'm told he just makes wine for fun as he is on of the most senior amway people around so just rakes in the cash and enjoys himself. clarendon hills is slightly different. again, very much focused on the usa but at various times has pushed here in varying degrees. that said, i think that certain quantities o his wines have always ben available here, at least on premise. never heard of R wines?? just googled them and the partnership between dan phillips - american importer and the man who brought many aussie wines to the attention of parker - and chris ringland. chris a top winemaker from the barossa - had three rivers, before clash of labelling rights. was at rockford for many years. now makes wine around the globe. tends to favour the heftier styles. these almost certainly would be made only for the usa market.

Thank you for the information Ken, very good stuff. I am a large fan of all three wineries. Mollydooker really has blown me away in the past couple of years, with Shiraz's that could be compared to ports. Just gigantic, heavily concentrated goodness. And Chris Ringland is an extremely talented winemaker. I'm curious. What are some of the bigger, more widely distributed labels in Austraila besides Penfolds that produce top shelf stuff?

What are some of the bigger, more widely distributed labels in Austraila besides Penfolds that produce top shelf stuff? hard question in some respects as we have about 2,500 wineries. penfolds is just part of fosters now along with wynns, wolf blass, lindemans and much much more. then we have hardys and then orlando (jacobs creek) - they are the really big ones. then a number of mid sized - yalumba and mcwlliams good. then a host of small ones. bit of a oush here to move away from the hugely concentrated turbo charged alcoholic reds.
