Hangfire Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 My patience ran out last night and I had to try one of the cigars I received in my first sampler. After dinner I chose a Ramon Allones Specially Selected and paired it with 2 fingers of Laphrioaig 10 yr old. I do not know the box code, year or anything else about this cigar so do not consider this a formal review. Nor do I think my experience with cubans (a total of 2 now) qualifies me. Nonetheless, I could review this cigar in 2 words - Thank You! OK - 3 words - Thank You God! Wonderful experience. The construction of the cigar was excellent with just a bit of give to the touch. Pre-light draw was perfect. Just enough resistance yet open enough to suggest a great smoke. Pre-light taste was, for me, interesting. I had trouble placing it. Tobacco, yes but, something else that I don't remember tasting in any NC. Somehow, the pre-light taste was rich if that makes sense. The cigar lit easily and the first puff confirmed the richness hinted at by the pre-light draw. Some spice - just a little around the edges but a full creamy flavor that I was at a loss to describe. Is that the fruits others have spoken of? A sip of Laphroaig. Curious! The Islay malt may be a bit overpowering for the cigar but it seems that the cigar has enhanced the smokiness of the whisky in a very nice way. A bit of water to clear the palate. The cigar continued to offer the rich flavor through the first third. As I hit the second third, the spice builds a bit yet still is at the edges, not overpowering. The spice kept floating in and out and the flavors changed slightly seemingly with each puff. The rest of the cigar was beyond my powers to describe. Suffice it to say that I enjoyed it thoroughly down to the point where I was burning my fingers and, even then, had to go back for one more sip. Ahhh, this could become a dangerous obsession. Now, what for Turkey Day to join an after dinner port?
mkz Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 The rest of the cigar was beyond my powers to describe. I love when that happens. Some things cannot be described with words. Great review!!
Tampa1257 Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Nice review and one that you will remember. Good job mate!
Don Candido Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Nor do I think my experience with cubans (a total of 2 now) qualifies me. You're qualified enough for me. I'd like to continue reading your reviews. Ahhh, this could become a dangerous obsession. Be careful. I don't know anyone personally , but some of us go off the deep end with this stuff. Cheers DC
