I have a several sticks that have torn wrappers around the foot. damage varies from about 1/4 to 1 inch or so. What would be the best way to remedy this? Smoke them as is? Clip them down past the damage area?

If they are cracked, just smoke them.

If the wrapper is unravelling in a bothersome way, you can use pectin from the grocer. I little goes a long way.

I guess cigar glue is fine, just don't use sticky tape.

My dad used to use tape. He would smoke right through it. This was before I was a cigar smoker. Still, I had the wherewithal to realize this might not taste good, and was probably toxic.

In my humble experience, sometimes you can smoke them as the are, sometimes not.

I always try to smoke them "as is" if it doesn't draw fairly good i cut them and light them again.

Same here - Burn them as is - cut if they fight back too much.

For some reason (to me); cutting a cigar back compromises the intended flavor profile.

A slight nip is one thing an inch or more essentially might present you with a different cigar entirely.

But that is just me

Personally, I have never enjoyed a cigar I have cut back.

At this level of damage, I'd just smoke them. They should not present any serious problems on smoking and as short as those tears are at the feet, it's not worth it to try and patch it.

I always wondered what causes this? It happens to me only occasionally. Is it wide humidity swings?

Personally, my cigars have incurred damage to the wrappers around the feet, from improper handling - (being allowed to move around and rub up against other smokes, etc.)

Humidity swings (rather severe) which including swings well above 70% RH can cause splits in the wrapper most anywhere in the cigar. These usually are not right on the edge of the foot. They also look to be deeper than simply the wrapper.
