Guest rob Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Ok guys... help me out here. I've been smoking Habanos (and the occasional Padron and Opus X) since 1998. Everything was going great... my palette was maturing, my desire to discover new flavours was growing and my knowledge base was improving. I was become a real Cigar Aficionado and on my way to becoming a connoisseur... another decade and I was going to get there. About 8 months ago something started happening every time I smoked. It was unbelievable... and there was nothing I could do to stop it.... it was, and still is, relentless. The more I tried to ignore the problem... the less it seemed it wanted to stop and go away. Everytime (and I mean EVERYTIME) I smoke I salivate like crazy. I take a puff and before I know it I have saliva forming (pooling in fact) in my mouth. It happens just about every single puff and almost instantly. So much so that I cant even bring myself to swallow.... I have to spit it out. I try to get rid of it discretely... but 1 to 2 hours of spitting becomes quite noticeable to others. As you can imagine... this is a huge problem as it makes smoking with guests (or inside) almost impossible. Anyone have this happen and know how to deal with it? Swallowing sounds like the way to go... but it tends to make you sick as the nicotine finds its way in large quantities into the stomach. I know - because I have tried. Relentlessly. Cheers gents. I only ask because I am getting desperate.
Tampa1257 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Rob, I have heard of others that tend to have a reaction to the nicotine. Have you tried to coat your palate with something before you light up? Say something like a spoonfull of sugar? The reason I say this, is that it sounds to me like your system is having a reaction to the nicotine and one way to reduce nicotine is sugar. Don't know if that will help or not, but either have a spit cup like those that dip tobacco or chew tobacco use or find a way to swallow that spit. Good luck!
perfectform Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Rob, in my experience this problem was reserved for the newbies to cigar smoking, as I'm recalling my good friend spitting incessantly while smoking just a petite corona. For myself, I only seem to salivate a lot when I'm either lighting up a cigar, or holding it in my mouth for an extended period. So I tend to think that a lot of contact with the mouth may be causing me to salivate. I don't know your smoking style so I can't say, however it may be from prolonged contact of the cigar with your mouth. Hope you get it figured out...
Guest rob Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Cheers for the prompt responses fellas... very much appreciated. Though I'm still not sure exactly what's causing it... Tampa's suggestion actually reminded me that I didn't give you all the facts. When I'm drinking stuff like Coke or Ginger Beer (The US guys call it root beer, I think) the problem goes away briefly. If I have a sip of these I can probably go about 2 or 3 mins without the saliva building up. Clearly, I try to time my sips out Told you fellas this was weird But deep down, all jokes aside... it really pisses me off. Especially because it's something that I have never had to worry about till just recently. Thanks again gents. Hopefully you'll still have me at your herfs if I'm in your neck of the woods :-D I'm visiting Rob and some other cigar buddies in QLD in a few weeks... hopefully they dont read this thread :-P
Shelby07 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 It may be temporary or it could be a sign of a physical problem. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/excessive-saliva/AN01744 Google "excessive saliva" - I got quite a few hits. If it only happens when you smoke it could be some kind of irritation or physical reaction.
Guest rob Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 » » If it only happens when you smoke it could be some kind of irritation or physical reaction. Yep, only when smoking. Googling was a good idea... lots of people with similar experiences. I'll sift through and hopefully find some answers. Cheers.

I normally don't smoke without some type of beverage to drink after every pull on the cigar.
cadillacdoc Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 » Everytime (and I mean EVERYTIME) I smoke I salivate like crazy. » A simple Pavlovian response? Maybe you should change your handle to Pavlov Rob ;>)
Arrow111 Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 i had this happen to me before. it's pretty annoying to feel like spitting after every draw. i think it had something to do with the mouthwash i was using.

When I first joined here I didn't realise Prez's name was also Rob... it can end up confusing at times when people are talking about Rob... and it has nothing to do with me.
