Pre- lighting without cutting

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

What a beautiful day to ,again, light up a cigar here in

the south of France.

Talking about lighting up, my question is, how many

of you know about lighting a cigar without cutting the cape first?

If you never heard of this, try it.

Take your cigar and light it with a long piece of cedar wood.

Get the end of the cigar to start up by putting the flame under the end and rotate the cigar till all around is lite then get it glowing in

the center. Once you get that done and the cigar is well lite, cut the

cape off and draw on it.

There is a good reason for this, the first draw of smoke

will not give out any uncomfortable tastes such as amonia or

harchness.

It's all a qustion of habit and once you get the nack it can go rather fast. What do you guys think?

Try it :ok:

I've read about this, but have never tried it. And though I'm not averse to giving it a shot, I'm

not sure if I believe in the theory.

My normal lighting technique might be looked upon as somewhat barbaric by a true "aficianado" :-)

I'll give it a whirl, but I don't see how this is any different than lighting a clipped cigar completely before drawing on it.

I don't think that lighting your smokes with a "Days of Thunder" Dupont Xtend while wearing Ray Ban Wayfarers and shouting, "SHOW ME THE MONEY," over "Danger Zone" blasting on the stereo is barbaric Colt...a little odd perhaps, but not barbaric. :-P

No way. I did it on the past a few times and very carefully because if you are not into it, you could char up the wrapper leaving a bad smell as you smoke. I sense you are a true aficionado and as long as you treat your cigar with respect, you have mine. remember that the first blow is not going to be tasted in the plate but blown on to the foot of the cigar just to ensure that you have reach an even smoke, if not rerached, then get the cedar spill lit once more and also describe circles with the cigar in your hand that certainçly would help your cigar burn evenly. ;-)

If it works for you, then more power for you.

I'll continue to clip before lighting my cigar. I have used matches, soft flame lighters, torches (single, double and triple), cedar spliffs, burning branches from the fire place, gas grills, well just about every type of flame source possible and for me, the moral of the story is to get the cigar well lite and then I always blow out of the cigar first before puffing in the cigar smoke.

Hi from Miami: From Miami101

Yes I have seen this before, and also do it myself sometimes. I learn this method from an old Cubans here in Miami...Note the process takes time...they like to use 3 matches.....even burn, before cutting the cap........but most of the time...I just light up....

I was just thinking that. I light my smokes this way but after I clip the cap and test the prelight draw. It usually takes me about 45 seconds or so but I find the cigars burn better.

I remembered seeing this technique beeing used by the Lady contestant of the 2006 Habano Sommelier event in the Festival Del Habano.

I discussed at that time with the German contestant who told me that for him it makes no difference at all...

I personally like to draw before lighting.

Hi Guibou,

Thank you all for your opinions , great replys.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't do this every time,9 out of 10

times I just light and basta, but when I do I find the first tastes

are different. Of course everyone has the right to start up his or

her cigar any way they want and what ever way you do it , is always,

the best.

Thank you all.
