Ken Gargett Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 rob kindly gave me one to try, knowing that i am a fan of lusi's, especially with some age. i have absolutely loved them from both 1997 and 1998 and i have put a box or two away from '04, i think. so i was delighted to be trying this. attractive light brown colour and nice oily sheen. a hint of box press and an enticing aroma when cold. opened with rich flavours, lots of spice, some old leather notes. quite complex. had a sweet core which was really attractive. the flavours were qite subtle and they evolved throughout the cigar. there wa a slow and consistent burn but quite even. midway, there was a problem keeping it alight but we moved past that. i think these have more left to give with more time. i thought it was worth 92 but as yet, they don't match those 97's and '98s.
shrink Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 A thoughtful review, Ken. I agree that the 2001's aren't a match for the '98s, and IMO will never be. For what it's worth, I still have most of a box of JUL03 that reveal that sweet subtle quality that characterizes a good Lusi. Leather, decaying cedar, with cinnamon and sweet spices. But the best young Lusi I've had in a long time are the early 2007's. These have a body and depth of flavor that bode well for future development. And there is a real earthiness in them that is reminiscent of the 90's.
Ken Gargett Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 shrink, thanks for that. i have not tried an '07 lusi but actually had sent rob an email asking about them just this afternoon so your thoughts perfectly timed.
