Caesar Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 I haven't seen any detailed reviews of this relatively new cigar and I don't believe that it has even been rated by CA yet. Any feedback on body, flavor profile, etc., would be appreciated. How does it compare to other pyramids such as the Montecristo No. 2 and H. Upmann No. 2? Thanks.
SmokinAl Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Sounds like an emergency Caesar, I'll light one up right away to review it for you...not just because I love them!

jdbrown Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Al, If you see Rob next week see if he will post a review for us! Thanks
lusitanias Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Hi SmokinAl, you wrote about your huge experience with these P2 and I'd like to know from which year were the best you have smoked. I own a box from 3/2005 and find them too light and not very tipical partagas flavor. the factory code is FIM. thanks, marcello
Tampa1257 Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Ceasar, It has been about a month since I last smoked a PSP No.2, yet the shear memory of it lasts with me still. To say that they are a wonderful cigar is just not saying enough. They have the "Old School" type Partagas flavors that remind me of a well aged 8-9-8, sweet green and red bell pepper, earth, leather combined with the shear pleasure found in a ripe PSD No.4 and the richness found in a PSdC No.1. To say that the PSP No.2 is complex is a understatement IMHO. Also IMHO the PSP No.2 is the strongest Pyramide currently available. For me, the PSP No.2 is the best Pyramide currently available. Much stronger than a Upmann No.2 or a Montecristo No.2, the closest to it in my opinion would be a VR Unicos with some age to it. Straight out of the box it is the best No. 2 available. How's that for a review? Tampa

I look forward to trying these very soon. Glad to hear that these are also enjoyable straight out of the box.
SmokinAl Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Tampa, Whilst I agree with you whole heartedly in all that you say, I think you and I should agree to keep it quiet. Speaking to Lisa last week they'd run out of boxes of 10 (with more arriving this week). The last thing we need mate is a run on the market! I say, stay selfish! All of the boxes I've smoked have been May or June 06 ex POS. Lusitanius, I just can't see these dropping away in flavour too much as there is so much there to start with I can only assume you've got some dodgy sticks. Feel free to send them to me and I'll do a full review of each one you have left. ;-)
GoSteelers Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 This is one of my favorites, have never been disappointed by a Sieries P or D.

shrink Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Straight out of the box it is the best No. 2 available. Pretty much sums it up.
Caesar Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 Well I couldn't resist, so I fired up one. Don't know box code info yet. Cigar did not have much rest from its long journey--maybe a day. At any rate, the flavor was outstanding. The spicy Cuban flavor was probably the best I have ever experienced. The aroma was intoxicating. Not surprisingly, as the cigar progressed the burn became quite crooked and the ash very flowery. I assume this is due to the trauma of the travel and perhaps the young age. The burn issues were the only thing that kept this cigar from being perfect. Hopefully, these burn issues will disappear after some rest.
Colt45 Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 I'm in the minority with this one - to date, I've found it to be mediocre at best. But then, I've not had much luck in general with Partagas from '05. It's been a while since I've smoked one - perhaps I'll try another soon.
bassman Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 My early 05s are not strong at all. In fact they are rather bland when compared to the Montecristo #2. Must be my taste, as I don't especially like the D4s either. However, my 05 Party Shorts have been excellent- stronger & more flavor than the P2.

A little more flavor, but heavily biased to the spicy side. Some leather and brown sauce (mole) did show very slightly at mid point, but overall, it lacked depth. Finish was paper and spice, and later there was some herbal and acidic sharpness (not in a terribly bad sense). While I would certainly try some from more recent vintages, I'd simply prefer to spend my time with the 898V or the SdC series. And i also agree on the '05 PSD4 - some of the most insipid cigars I've smoked - but again, I'd surely try some '06-'07s.

I'm really intrigued with this. Could it be that the shelf life of these two cigars is two years? It just doesn't seem likely. Colt I'll send you one of my P2's to try. I'll be intrigued to see if you feel there's a difference between it and the 05 you smoked.

The batch of singles I had were not from the initial release, but from when they first became available again. I've read more than once that there were differences. I have one more from FEB 05 that I will try soon for comparison. And no worries - put a couple aside for when we meet up ;-)

My 05s (from MAR) were bland when fresh in 05 & bland today. Rather smoke two 05 Shorts, an 06 898 or my older Lonsdales & Seleccion Privada if in a Partagas mood.
SmokinAl Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Hi Caesar, I haven’t had a bad one of these and I’ve had a lot of them. I can only recall two with construction issues, both rolled a little tight from a box of 25. I’ve had no issues from boxes of 10. The wrapper is a lovely rich brown in this one but I got a box from Rob a few months ago that were almost dark enough to be Oscuro and they looked like they been oiled! I clip the foot with my new Xikar. I’m a convert. These things are great. The construction is flawless as usual and the pre-light draw offers only the smallest of resistance. The foot feels spongy but the rest of the cigar is nice and firm. Silky smooth mouth-feel. The taste on the back of the palette is hard to describe. It’s almost effervescent in character towards the 2/3. When the cigar is burning hot there’s masses of Pepper but the character I find most prevalent is that wonderful stewed fruit that you look for in other cigars (and to my mind) isn’t sufficient in the D4. The P2 is very similar to the D4 but more so if you know what I mean. The flavour profile is very similar but with “Legs”. I’ve been through 8 boxes of 10 of these in past 6 months and I’m forcing myself to lay some down (but it can be a test). Half way through the smoke I put down the book I was reading, lay back on the couch and simply revelled in the experience. Ahh, the things you can get away with when the missus is interstate.:-D Caesar, it wasn’t an onerous task I set myself to review this cigar, in fact I appreciate the excuse. It's a little late now for photos but I'll add them tomorrow. 92 without any doubt and I hope I can hang onto these long enough to try a review again in 2 or 3 years. Thanks mate.
