fugwumpy Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 » Also seriously check out the Palio cutters! My favorite by far and I hear there are new designs due out any time now.... Mark?
Claudius Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Lighters and cutters... dont get me started! I've tried them all: - Colibri worked for a month. Took it to the shop, they "fixed" it. After 2 hours, it stopped working. I think I threw it away. - Prometheus torch worked 3 times, never been able to light a cigar with it! Recently saw it in my wife's car. - Dupont Ligne 2 (I have 4 of these): never a problem, ever. When you dont use them for a year or more, you'll have to have the seals replaced and you're good to go for another decade. - Dupont X-tend: I have 3 of these. Every one of them has always ignited every single time I've pressed the button (unless empty, obviously). I have no idea how they do it, but it's impressive. - Xikar cutter: plastic housing version is flexible, blades dont meet in the middle. Junked it after a week. Seen a metal versdion, blades dont meet in the middle either, not sharp anyway. Needs significant effort to cut. - Palio cutter: no blades not meeting in the middle issues as they are guided on "rails". However, the blades on my 3 Palios have become dull after a few months. - El Caso cutter: works fine (not perfect as it's a single blade, but very good still), but as it's a table cutter you cant just put it in your pocket ;-)

the dane Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 PALIÓ cutter, works like a charm. only downside is that it can sometimes fall apart, but i just put it back together, no probs.. Blazer torch... had a creme brulee torch explode in my hand so I only use my blazers now
tattoodad13 Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Usually it's my Colibri cutter and a Nibo torch have had both about 3 years.
56Tweed Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 I really like the Xikar cutters, but I normally reach for a SAK cutter. Its so sharp and accurate, I love it! Lighters are much more finicky. I've had at least a dozen over the years. The Porsche Design lighters are very nice, but I've had some trouble with mine. I normally stick with the cheapies now, but still have a Xikar and others.
winelover Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 » Graham, » » I'm not trying to shill for another website, but Mike's Cigars in Florida » (which sells NC cigars) has the X Tend lighters on sale from time to time » and usually for less than $100 U.S. In fact, I think they are on sale » right now. Don't worry about it Graham, I tried to order an Extend from them this morning and they confirmed they don't do international shipments although their website looks like it's set up for it. Too many dodgy Australians I guess. ;-)

cf2112 Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I like my cheap ($2) blazer knockoff and Zippo with insert best. I own a lot of cutters/lighters at home it's a SAK or Xikar scissors and a Zippo with insert. When at the golf course a knife and cheap blazer knockoff. Going to a herf Xikar scissors and a Zippo with insert fit nicely in a pant pocket. I do not cut the head so any sharp cutter will work as will a sharp pocket knife, I put the cutter to the cigar and twist the cigar removing only the cap.
smokum Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Thanks and I agree...AF1 is one of the most visible symbols and quite a piece of equipment too. One of the cool things about this watch and I dont know if other Aerospace are like this is the fact that the lighting on the digital display is safe for night vision goggles !! :Sorry for the post hijack: back to the cutters and lighters...

Smokum, If you don't mind my asking, how did you come across the watch? Would be great to add something like that to my collection. All I have from the plane (besides the pics) are some boxes of M&Ms and tins of Whitman chocolates with the President's seal.
smokum Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Car collector buddy of mine knows a crew member. They wanted to commission this watch but Breitling had to have a minimum order of 30 . AF1 mustered 23 and my buddy took 10. All are numbered. I think #1 went to Commander in Chief..the rest went to crew and my bud which is where I got mine #24 of 33. We had to commit last year. They arrived at Christmas time. Unfortunately...they all got snapped up. It's really a cool piece..

smokum Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Aerospace Advantage Titanium Case Titanium Grey Dial Professional II Bracelet in Titanium SuperQuartz TM Chronograph The Air Force One seal is placed where the #3 would normally be.If you look at the presidential seal...it has 50 stars around the eagle and 13 above. perfect 5 point stars......it even says e pluribus unim in the banner! We better quit hi jacking this thread on cutters and lighters !! Mods can move this if they would like. I would love to see what watches some of you guys have. I am not a watch guy but I couldn't pass this up. Hopefully the FOH watch will get done !
SmokinAl Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Smokum, that is flaming awesome! I am seriously envious. Chris, that photo is a hell of a keepsake. I used to have a Presidential Cigar, which had the seal on the stick and the stick sealed inside a large glass test tube (which made the whole Monica thing much easier to understand). It was given to me by an aid of Clinton at a charity dinner when he was in Aus. I cherished that damn thing. Found the remains of it one morning after a party at home. It appears one of my "friends" had helped themselves to it whilst a bit under the weather.:-( :-( :-(
VigorishSLC Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 My Palio is hands down the finest cutter I've used, though I've yet to find (despite my obsessive care) a lighter that has provided superior service.

I'm lucky to have four other photos with the President and Mrs. Bush -- including two from White House Christmas parties. It's too bad the President isn't more popular because he and Mrs. Bush are both really great people to be with. At the last Christmas party I went to, I brought my mom as my guest and she even got a kiss from him. It's too bad you lost that cigar to some friends with sticky fingers! I hope you kept the cigar band and the tube anyway. I always thought that the White House had a special line of gift cigars, but never knew for sure. I know that the current President does smoke a cigar from time to time and even hosted a smoker in the White House a couple of years ago. Not sure what kind of cigars he prefers though. If I get the chance, I'll ask sometime.

Distract security and try and steal a few boxes. :-D A friend of mine scored a cigar ashtray with the seal which was pretty cool. Longer life expectancy than a presidential cigar too!

What do you swear by? My cutter is a Xikar Xi3, which granted I've only had for not quite two years, but I'd call it bulletproof - certainly wouldn't want to get my fingers anywhere near those blades. Haven't found a "bulletproof" lighter yet. My last Colibri was a disappoinment and my current Colibri Venom is not living up to the hype.
