» anyone familiar? any good?

Pyrat Planters Pistol 3.75 ml. Is some good chit! My favorite. It's perfect for sipping. Has a sweet faintly burnt cane taste I love. Goes great with a cigar that is fuller in body. I pair it with Opus X and Anjeo's as often as I can.

The XO variety seems to be simular, just a bit heavier on the pallet. What I'm trying to say is it feels thicker for some odd reason, and leaves a longer finish through my nose, if that makes any sense. Ya gotta try it.

PYRAT rums are blended and produced on the island of Anguilla in the British West Indies.

It changed a couple of years ago. Was a very good rhum right up there with Zacapa and Zaya.

Not so now. Not bad just nothing like what it was IMHO.

I do not buy it any longer. The Zacapa 23 year is the bees knees. . .

I do like Barbancourt 15 and El Dorado as well. :-P

That was the word I was thinking of...butterscotch. Very strong like it was made from it! Too damn candy sweet for me.

Ive always enjoyed this rum, just got a new bottle a month or so ago. I find it very citrusy and sweet, and definitely a smooth sipping rum. The stores around here never carry any zacapa or other good rums, and im sure the Pyrat isnt as good as these, but when the alternative is Bacardi.....ill go with the Pyrat:-D

interesting reviews and thanks.

some was coming up at an auction in sydney but i must say, i find the zacpa a fraction sweet so if it is in the spectrum beyond that, probably not my style. i do love the appleton, especially the 21-year-old. just won a bottle from a mate in a bet.

Ken get the DIPLOMATICO rum instead has perfect balance for a sipping Rum excellant.

Light years ahead of the ones mentioned above.

This is actually for all the FOH members living around the Tucson area. Sierra (Sorry) Vista might as well be the darkside of the moon when it comes to decent booze.

Good rums and bourbons, the exotic stuff are near impossible for me to find. Does anyone have a line on a good liquor store that sells any of the fantastic stuff mentioned by the members?

I would be willing to drive to Phoenix one weekend if I knew of a good spot.

For those of you living in LA, do you know of any high-end liquor shops in the San Gabriel Valley? I can always get someone to mail me purchases from there.

Ken. Yes, if the Zacapa is a bit sweet for your tastes, the Pyrat would be 10 steps above it in terms of sweetness. It really does smell like its melted butterscotch in a bottle. It is very heavy and coating in the mouth and I feel if the sweetness were toned down to Zacapa standards - or less - it could be pretty good because the other flavors of honey and allspice and charred wood are nice, but the overwhelming sweetness is a turn off.

much ta, guys. appleton and a few others aside, i find i keep coming back to the classics for me - that is, those crackers from cuba that are much more elegant than many. especially the top rums from santiago.

Pyrat XO is a good rum, but very sweet indeed, sweeter than Zacapa, yes. Butterscotch / caramel / honey, yes, but the main aroma is that of mandarin. This stuff stinks of mandarin / orange. I used a tiny little bit in a chocolate mousse instead of cointreau and that worked really nice. I'd drink it straight with a glass of water on the side, on a summer night, but woudlnt drink it regularly. It is well worth the 50 or so it costs.

The stuff I really like is Clement Vieux from Martinique & Barabancourt 8 year. Perhaps my palate is shot, but the only difference I find between the 8 year & 15 year is the price!

That might have been what I was experiencing. Because I could definitely tell a change from the 1st bottle to the 2nd bottle.

I dont know how far it is from the San Gabriel Valley but HiTimes in Costa Mesa is a Liquor Mecca! I went by there while visiting cali a while back. Asked where the rum was, and they pointed me to a isle. Not a shelf but a whole isle just for Rum!!! Dont even get me started on the beer selection. I bought two bottles of Zaya for 21.00 each. Goes for 50.00 over here on the rock! Also picked up a bottle of Ron Matusalem for an excellent price.

As mentioned earlier, it seemed to be better in the past. I have heard that they straightened things out but really dont know. It is a sweet rum that goes well with cigars. Some others that I enjoy depending on my mood:

Zacapa 23 - Not a sweet as Pyrat

Zaya - sweetness in between pyrat and zacapa.

Ron Pampero - very good

Ron Matusalem 15 - about as sweet as pyrat. I actually prefer this one over pyrat when in the mood for something sweet.
