World's most expensive champagne launched

Perrier-Jouët, the prestige Cuvée owned by Pernod Ricard, has announced the launch of the world's most expensive champagne product.

The company used the first day of spring (March 20) - in keeping with the flower-themed Belle Epoque Perrier Jouët label - to publicise details of a limited edition 100-piece set with each case containing 12 bottles.

Retailing at £40,000 a case, purchase of a tailor made champagne set will include a trip to the Maison Belle Epoque and an opportunity to meet the current cellar master Herves Deschamps.

A bespoke liquer created by Deschamps will also be added to the champagne vintage.

Olivier Cavil, Perrier-Jouët communications director, said: “Perrier-Jouet has always placed innovation, integrity and quality at the heart of its undertaking.

“Since the beginning, the House has worked with small volumes in limited production with a dedication to the art of champagne creation. The custom champagne personifies this philosophy."

A three-litre bottle of Dom Perignon champagne, which was sold in 2005, held the previous record and retailed at £9,365.

Hi Ken,

Just a sparkling question for you: I went in to my local bottle shop chain and bought a bottle of la Grande Dame. I said to the kid in the store that I was surprised that they stored all their bottles of champagne upright. He told me that because the wine is under pressure, the cork stays moist.

I'd never heard of that. Have you?

Cheers,

George

George,

I've never heard of that either. Ken may have some additional thoughts, but I've always seen champagne stored on its side in good wine shope here in the U.S. I don't necessarily think you'd be at risk if you bought a bottle that was upright for a short period of time in a store, but I'd surely store it on its side in the cellar.

george, he is an idiot. shot periods are no real problem but if upright, will dry out and with the pressure inside, be far quicker to cause problems.

» The kid may well be an idiot, but nice thinking on the feet!

i suspect that is being far too generous.

to be hones, i would not be buying anything, let alone something as good as the dame, from a store that looked after its wine like that.

Bugger! Unfortunetaly I had that feeling too. But I really wanted the 1996 and it's for a special occasion: proposing! :-)

Reminds me of the time I bought a bottle of 1996 Dom in the Malaysian duty free for AUD$100!!! I had nightmares of it sitting out in the 40oC sun for weeks before going to the shop!! :)

George,

Congrats on your upcoming engagement! I hope you and your bride enjoy the La Grand Dame very much. I love your story about the 96 Dom. A year ago I was at a Sam's Club and found a 96 Dom for like $120 U.S. It's in my wine cooler still. I know Parker rated it a 98. I haven't tried any other vintage 96s, but I have a bottle of 90 La Grand Dame in my cellar as well that I still haven't opened.

george, congrats. hope it went better than a mate of mine. he planned a special evening at one of sydney's finest. they allowed him to bring his own wines and he took some serious stuff. first wine comes out, intended declares she hates it and big fight ensues. he skips the proposal. finally asked her several years later. she has, to this day, no idea why it took him so long.

1996 is the finest champagne vintage i have ever seen. dom is brilliant, so too, la grande dame. krug astonishing, salon nearly as good. but it is great across the board. grab what you can. (provided you know it is well stored).

i do know that some shipments to asia of champagne have been poorly treated, left in the sun on the doks for ages. there was a heap of laurent perrier's grand siecle going very cheap a while back, for just that reason.

Thanks guys! Don't jinx me now, cause I'm planning on flying down to Sydney!

Maybe that's why I prefered Krug NV to 1996 (Malaysian) Dom...

Food for thought.

And Ken you're a pain in the ar*se! :-P : Waving a red flag at a bull with your write up on Krug 1996. Was seriously thinking of that over the Dame. Maybe I'll get a bottle in France next time. The Krug NV was 95euros, much better than buying it in Oz!

Since the beautiful Anemones of Galle' are mentioned here, as well as a nod given to 3 liter bottles, I am compelled to post this picture of a 3L I found in a local liquor store a couple of months ago. Since the fill was good and these things are normally crated horizontally I took the chance...

This and a few other choice bottles will fall victim to a week at the beach this summer.. hopefully with some of those Monte Sublimes Ken mentioned! Gawd, I love Champagne, and Cigars! :-D
