okie2
Tonight is the perfect night to share some quality time with an “old friend”. The weather outside is miserable. The wind is howling and driving sheets of heavy rain against the windows, sounds like a damn sleet storm with the occasional freight train going past. The wood stove is fired up and keeping everything inside warm and cozy. The big pot of coffee perking on the wood stove is about ready. I really enjoy the old percolators for making coffee over a campfire or on the wood stove; always brings back pleasant memories from bygone days in the accompaniment of old friends. A well-aged Bolivar Coronas Gigantes is always my cigar of choice. This one was from a couple of cabs of 02s I bought a few years back. A well-aged one has a nice oily sheen. Love running my finger and thumb down the wrapper and feeling the slick oily residue and the slight tooth of the wrapper. This BCG had a nice appearance, firm to the touch with a good pre light taste. I have always struggled with describing the sweet taste in the first half or two thirds of a well-aged gigantes. I believe the following quote is pretty close to what I am experiencing. “Saffron tastes like licorice or Pernod,” he said. “Wait, it has a little rum and honey quality. Or maybe it’s like when there’s too much gingerbread in something. Have you ever smoked cloves? It’s actually kind of like that.” I’ve never smoked cloves and I don’t think I will ! During the last third I can really taste the spice, leather and earth in the back of the throat while the taste, albeit not as predominate, of the saffron is still noticeable through the nose. I like to purge occasionally in the last third as it calms down the spiciness or a slight tar build up, and lets more of the saffron flavor through. A really delightful and delicious taste as the spice and saffron share the moment instead of either one seeking dominance. A wonderful two hours spent with an “old friend”. El Presidente
Lovely review of a cigar which ranks at the top of the list in the world of Churchills alongside recent Winstons. For sheer consistency the BCG gets the nod. It has been consistently excellent since 1998 when many other Churchills have fallen away.
anacostiakat
Good review! This is rather timely for me because I smoked up my '03s and decided to try one from an '07 box I got late last year. I definitely have to get another box! This is actually the second I have tried. The first after two months was really nondescript and left me wondering. This one shows great promise and good flavor. I am glad I decided to try it and won't be touching the rest any time soon.

I've seen unbelievable consistency with these cigars. I just wish vendors didn't run out of the cabs. :-|
bassman
Very nice review. I've smoked a few of the same code & they are nice. For some reason though, I find the early 03s better suited to my tasted & stocked up on those. When the hub bub about 06s was at it's peak I decided to get an 06 box too & indeed, consistantly good.
