Upmann Mag 46 MAR03

Well I am quite the little review machine lately. Doing my part and all that. Harrump harrump. I didn’t get a harrump outta that guy.

OK, Procrastinating from the “real” writing I am supposed to be doing. You say tomatoe…

Have smoked these consistently from this box since I bought it 4 years ago or so. Unfortunately. Only a few left. Time has done it well, and they were great back then. I bought his box having never tried one before. Just sounded like my kind of cigar and it was.

Light Colorado, lumpy cylindrical, moderate veining. Straight tobacco smell cold, slight sweet tobacco tones when drawed upon. Draw a bit loose but acceptable.

Honeyed, medium body. Leather and light earth, coffee. Honey of the more somber variety, lavender honey not clover. Medium plus body, strong nicotine from the get go. Smoke smells of graham cracker.

Smoke volume quite high, long soft finish. Burn slightly erratic but always self-correcting.

Halfway becomes stronger, tobacco flavor more intense. I suppose this is what I keep reading people call the “clean tobacco taste” in the Upmann, which I disagree with personally. To me it is like calling classifying a great Pinot as having a “clean wine taste.” But I digress again. Honey on the background and hints of jasmine which I recall were vibrant when I smoked this young.

Honeyed tobacco character continues, with an increase in earthiness and strength. Aftertaste a mix of earth and floral character. Coffee-chocolate pleasant bitterness. Quite an earthy smoke the latter third. A few herbal notes and overall quite an intense finale to the cigar. Black pepper and spicy and I am reminded that this is still a fairly young cigar. But I love it in this stage of development, too.

I would probably give it a 92. Still quite a bit of room to improve, some very slightly askew smoking characteristics, but really just a wonderful smoke. Strong, complex, dynamic.

I’ve had a good run of cigars lately. Some crappy ones, of course, that I haven’t reviewed. I promise to review some crap to balance the scales. I recently had a Genios that tasted like wax. So no I’m not a TOTAL habano ****. Just a binger. Hope the binge lasts, though…

You say tomatoe…

and I say tomahtoe...

Let's call the whole thing off.

I really used to love the Mag. But the affair began to fade in '04. I haven't had a good one since then (other than my aged stock). But thanks for the review, anyway.

Yeah, it's not much fun to review duds, is it? But we really should, in the spirit of intellectual honesty, and to warn the fancy.

Thanks for another entertaining review, Matthew.

Yeah my 2003's are/were something special. I haven't bought any in a few years. Wonder how the more recent stock is.

I had a couple of boxes of late 06 which were excellent. I thought that perhapse they had returned. Had a dud DIC 06 almost straight afterward.

Good to very good boxes can be found. It is a matter of ordering in a manner where Lise has the request to be filled when we can be 85% certain that the Upmann 46 is "on". Could be a wait of a week, a month or three.

Now ya tell me! :-D I just placed another order today. Will do that, though, for the next time. I've got to get some more Mags aging.
